Only snafu was the absolute sudden unexplained and glaring omission of a character on page 111 who should have had an explanation for his unresolved absence. Some observers noted that cover artist Steve Stone's work appeared at least partially as if created by an AI art-generator. There are some absolutely great moments with characters that I've grown to love in the original series, and it's always a pleasure to have their back stories fleshed out a little more. I felt like his original 6 were a little gimmicky - like seeing the rest of the Star Wars universe you always wanted to see but then realize it was better keeping it mysterious.

I had slightly higher hopes for the exploration of Falar, for actually going into the dark underbelly of the Jhistal cult and in that respect, this book didn’t quite hit the mark. If you've read Malazan and you like it, there's no reason not to read this book as long as you've read the three previous ones in this cycle. Whereas Dancer’s Lament only featured three point-of-view perspectives, Forge of the High Mage has approximately a dozen.He’s not my favorite overpowered mage in the Malazan universe, but this volume does well to humanize him a bit. loaded with set pieces, contains wonderful dialogue, witty exchanges, explosive showdowns, unlikely alliances, and features some of the finest character creations that the genre has to offer. My only regret, and I appreciate it may have been a little dry, was we didn't get a little more context on the Jhistal and it's exact perversion.

There were a few awesome moments, and a few questions answered, but that wasn't enough to make this book memorable .

I did laugh at the very end of the book, where a cheeky Kellanved pats Tay on the back and says he’s lived up to the potential Kellanved saw in him.Tay (the titular High Mage) steals the show, he really comes on leaps and bounds as a character from a largely unknown, pretty stereotypical big hitter type character to someone with nuance and it gives you understanding of how he is, who he is.
