Description

The Frog and Frog Seating in the body of these Bench planes is based on the Bedrock design, first seen on early Stanley planes, meaning the seating pad in the body is fully machined flat to mate with an equivalent full face and machined, underside of the Frog.

of 5° or 10° will increase performance, help achieve a razor edge quickly, and improve edge life in hardwoods. This bench plane's cutting iron is 2" wide and 3mm thick, increasing rigidity, with a hardness of 60-62 Rockwell C, and the cryogenic treatment means that these blades will hold their edge even longer. This ensures absolute stability of the Frog, providing a firm and solid surface for the cutting iron, which again rests on a fully machined upper side of the Frog. The knob and handle are carefully shaped from Bubinga hardwood sanded to fit your hand perfectly and sealed giving a very tactile and comfortable plane. The front knob and handle are made from solid bubinga wood which provides a firm and comfortable grip. Your expertise at Tilgear is something I value greatly, especially when it comes to selecting the right tools and equipment for our school's needs.

The Faithfull Jack planes have a long base and are used for the initial preparation of rough timber. The Bedrock design uniquely allows the mouth width to be adjusted without dismantling the Frog and Iron assembly.

The accuracy of this mechanism allows for the Cutting Iron to be advanced to give a virtually "Zero" mouth opening, allowing the finest shavings to be taken even on the most difficult of timbers. The accuracy of this mechanism allows for the Cutting Iron to be advanced to give a virtually "Zero" mouth opening, allowing the finest shavings to be taken even on the most difficult of timbers. A lever cap with a brass locking screw secures the blade assembly and enables easy release for sharpening. It is often sooner than this however different banks process these with varying levels of efficiency. These planes are ready to use from the box and do not need hours of flattening and fettling to make them fit for use (though we appreciate many woodworkers will prefer to hone the cutting iron themselves.

After heat treating, the blade is fully surface ground on the top, back, and cutting edge, giving a smooth, flat surface that will take a mirror finish very quickly. In fact, the combination of the mouth location and the very sensitive feed adjustment lets this plane serve as a jointer for most cabinet work, just as a nr. This extra length of sole in front of the blade makes it much easier to cut accurately because the extra-long nose makes it easier to maintain the sole flush to the material at the start of a cut. Handles and knobs are of selected rosewood (post-war models are made of beech and late 1990’s models were made of impact resistant resin, or plastic. The 5-1/4W is made from ductile cast iron and has an adjustable frog with a combined feed and lateral adjust mechanism that is sturdy, yet sensitive and accurate.

Clifton bench planes are crafted from the finest materials and hand finished in Sheffield - the body and frog are made from accurately machined grey cast iron with their sides and sole fully ground. The cap iron is a one piece design giving rigid clamping and the Frog locating pins and screws are made from polished and ground stainless steel. In fact, the combination of the mouth location and the very sensitive feed adjustment lets this plane serve as a jointer for most cabinet work. has a 50mm wide blade (rather than 45mm and the mouth is 110mm back of the nose compared with 89mm for the original.

The Veritas 5-1/4W varies from the traditional 5-1/4 in various ways, but the two most significant dimensional differences are that the Veritas has a 50 mm (2 inch) wide blade (rather than 44 mm - 1-3/4 inch) and the mouth is 110 mm (4-3/8 inch) back of the nose compared with 89 mm (3-1/2 inch) for the original. The raised lip under the bevel of the chip-breaker is back beveled 1° to ensure that the leading edge contacts the blade firmly. Quangsheng bedrock pattern handplanes, unlike the more common Bailey pattern, have a full contact area between the body and the frog, hence the name 'bedrock'.
