The Ron Barceló brand was introduced in 1930 by Spanish immigrant Julian Barceló, domestically Ron Barceló is widely accepted as the market leader. You can find a lot of history on the Barceló and Dominican rum in general at the Dominican Rum Guide. Its corporate vision is to promote social well-being while maintaining its commercial operations. To do so, Barceló involves its collaborators in community initiatives. Since 2009, the company has launched multiple social programmes through its AFD-Barceló Foundation, in partnership with Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos. This rums popularity in Spain is down to its mixability and competive price. The Spanish (like me) really enjoy a rum and cola. Spirits are leaning towards premiumisation, and Barceló rums are a part of this trend. Consumers are beginning to appreciate and demand the organoleptic properties of high-end dark aged rums and different cask-finished rums. Even if we have gained recognition among the rum producers, there is a lot of work to do for consumers to fully recognise the premium rum industry.

Vizcaya represents a full product line from Oliver & Oliver, naming this expression after the impressive age of the spirit. It’s aged for an average of 18-21 years in bourbon barrels and is made from fresh cane juice instead of molasses. The palatefeatures heavy, earthy tones with sugar cane and palm sugar present but subtle. The finish is short and closes with a sweeter note of molasses, toffee, and brown sugar. 4. Brugal 1888 Thanks to the careful preparation of each product, adapting to the consumers’ tastes around the world, and to an international marketing strategy, Ron Barceló now reaches countries on five continents. These include competitive markets such as Russia, the United States, Spain, Germany, Czechia, China, Chile, Colombia or Peru. For almost 100 years, Ron Barceló has maintained its status as the Dominicans’ rum, bringing flavours and textures from its country to foreign consumers.Today, the company is one of the largest contributors to the Dominican Republic in terms of investments, eco-friendly commitments, fiscal contributions, and high-quality standards towards local and international consumers.

Pour it into your glass. If not using a coconut, a highball glass is ideal, or something tall and round. In the glass Barceló Anejo reveals itself to be a nice golden/orange colour. The nose is pretty muted and uninspiring. A little alcohol and some light vanilla. There’s nothing wrong with the nose but little to get excited about either. The hydrometer test shows a little added sugar – I don’t think this has much influence it may smooth out some of the rougher edges. It doesn’t detract from this being a more authentic style of rum. On the nose, you’ll find notes of roasted coffee, milk chocolate, and dried apricots. The palate is full-bodied with distinct notes of cherries, cinnamon, raisins, caramelized apples, candied oranges, and sweet strawberries. This wonderful medley of delightful flavors is topped off with a long, simple finish of toffee. 5. Brugal XV Rum A younger expression from Brugal, their XV Rum is a blend of rums, aged first in white American oak barrels for three to eight years. They are then aged for an additional two to three years in ex Pedro Zimenex sherry casks. The result is the perfect combination of dry and sweet with incredible smoothness. At Bar Convent Berlin (BCB) 2023, we spoke with Otto Flores, Ron Barceló global brand ambassador, to learn more about this special bottling. It is made from exclusive reserves of Barceló Imperial Rum, which have been aged for more than a decade under the meticulous attention of master rum maker Eduardo Galíndez.Barceló is the name and brand of a variety of rums from the Dominican Republic produced by Ron Barceló S.R.L. Barceló has its plant and distillery in San Pedro de Macorís. [1] [2] Company history [ edit ] Though it’s not aged nearly as long as the previous expression, this one is still top-notch. It contains a blend of rums that are aged for an average of six years. The Dominican environment is hot and humid which does increase the speed of aging. This expression is aged almost entirely in American bourbon barrels which are routinely scraped and re-charred to achieve the optimal flavor.

In 1974, Don Julián Barceló handed over the reins of the business to his nephew Miguel Barceló and 6 years later, in 1980 Ron Barceló Imperial was born, premium emblematic rum, leader in its class since the day it was launched and the most internationally awarded Dominican rum.

years later, in 2001, it partnered with a group of Spanish entrepreneurs to create a strategic alliance with the aim of selling products all over the world, with the exception of the Dominican Republic. In 2002, Barceló & Co separated itself of its global operations and the Barceló Díaz and García families created a new company, called Añejos Barceló, now Ron Barceló S.R.L.. In 2006, this company acquired the Barceló rum rights in its country. From that moment, the brand set its new precedent in sales volume, portfolio expansion, positioning, innovation and internationalisation. The Dominicans’ rum Launched earlier this year as part of Ron Barceló’s Rare Blends Collection, this rum is a nod to the producer’s unwavering commitment creating distinctive and unique spirits. The profile on this rum is complex, likely a result of the careful and deliberate aging process. The sugar cane is harvested from local plantations before being double-distilled in their copper stills. As a sipper its unremarkable – sweet young alcohol and a little zesty spiciness. It’s a young column distilled rum and does little to convince you otherwise. It doesn’t really have anything wrong with it but its averageness is its most striking feature. It has a little sweetness, slight notes of oak on the palate. The finish is quite hot and spicy but very short.

That same year the bottles for Ron Barceló Imperial, Gran Añejo and Añejo were redesigned and a new era began. The distillery was founded in the 1800s meaning they have generations of knowledge and expertise to utilize and grow from. They originally founded the distillery in Cuba but relocated to the Dominican Republic out of necessity in 1959. The distillery was founded by Andres Brugal Montaner. Originally Spanish, he moved his family to the Dominican. He began experimenting with distillation and cane juice while still in Cuba, though, giving him some experience to build on. He opened the distillery almost immediately after settling in the Dominican Republic in 1888.
