About this deal

I’m finding it so hard to find the right words for this review as it was just a truly stunning, beautifully written, heartwarming, heart-wrenching, amazing and perfect beyond measure. I’m not sure if the author is now writing for a different type of teenager than 20 years ago or if I am reading her book as a person who has experienced things I never expected 20 years ago but this did not feel like a ‘teen read’. Leon ends up having sex with Laura, it’s a blurred line of consent as we realise Laura doesn’t actually know what is happening and is therefore never able to say yes or no. As well as winning many awards for her books, including the Children's Book of the Year, Jacqueline is a former Children's Laureate, and in 2008 she was appointed a Dame.

Wilson did an excellent job of framing Laura to the reader, so when the encounter with Leon happens, you truly believe she had no idea of what had just occurred. The disgust and judgement piled onto her from relatives and acquaintances made me empathise with anyone who actually had to go through something like this back in the day.

The rear of the book includes a note on sexual consent and some (UK only) organisations and resources available for anyone needing support or information. Her prefab home is undoubtedly the nicest in their area, but still is in a street dubbed ‘Shantytown’ by her Grammar School classmates.A heartbreaking, compelling and timely story for older readers about teen pregnancy, family trouble and unlikely friendships, set in 1960.

the topic of consent and adoption was tackled wonderfully can we expect anything less and was a gripping story for older readers. They were my safety blanket and I look back on them with fondness and comfort , and was eager to read one now I’m in my early 30s with the view of picking up from where I left off but my goodness this book is not a comfort blanket. Moreover, the story is followed by two notes from Adoption UK and the Schools Consent Project for anyone who may have been affected by the tale.Double Act won the prestigious Smarties Medal and the Children’s Book Award as well as being highly commended for the Carnegie Medal. I was surprised when I so easily slipped back into the world of Jacqueline Wilson at the ripe old age of 29. Aspirations to keep up with a wealthy friend are agonizing, and result in a huge mistake that she doesn't even realise she's making. I've been a Jacqueline Wilson fan since my teens and once again, she doesn't hold back in exploring difficult topics and bringing you on an emotional journey.

The first half of the story allows us to get to know Laura with all her dreams, worries and imaginings. This book is aimed at older readers than Jacqueline Wilson’s usual target audience so do beat that in mind.

She has written over 100 books and is the creator of characters such as Tracy Beaker and Hetty Feather. Set in the 1960s, before sex education in schools was the norm, a time when unmarried mothers were pitied and shamed and teen pregnancies were hidden from society - girls often left with little support from family and authorities and had no choice but to give up their babies - the story follows Laura, a bright only child from a poor background with a scholarship to the local grammar school. One of Jacqueline’s most successful and enduring creations has been the famous Tracy Beaker, who first appeared in 1991 in The Story of Tracy Beaker. This book I thoroughly enjoyed, it tackled a tough topic well and gives some extra information at the end of the book about adoption and consent.
