Description

I missed listening to audiobooks while I walked, as well as all the other handy things my smartphone could do. James Williams’s Stand Out of Our Light: Freedom and Restriction in the Attention Economy is published by Cambridge.

Consider the authors Cal Newport and James Clear for deeper discussions of the value of scheduling our work and how we can create powerful methods to stick to our plans. Much easier to make good decisions when you identify as someone who eats healthily or isn't a smoker than if you identify as someone who has a sweet tooth or a smoker trying to give up. And Eyal can make people who get distracted by adversarial design less inclined to demand more from their technologies, and more inclined to demand “superpowers” of themselves that their all-too-human limitations render them unable to meet. In response, we might ask: how could the algorithm be designed so that it promotes equality instead?Simple and quick read covering helpful strategies and tactics for effectively managing attention in an ever more distracting world. To throw everything back on the individual and to ignore the structural causes of distraction is not only unscientific in its approach to human nature, it is unjust in its implications for society, and unimaginative in its capitulation to design. Despite the class' title, "Mastering Influence and Persuasion," Chance's confession revealed that she herself was not immune to manipulation. A few weeks later, I had a stack of unread papers piled neatly next to me as I watched the news on TV. I'm quite surprised that after popularizing the "Hooked" model and even mentioning it at the beginning of this book; the author offers such impractical advice.

I highly recommend this book as something that will reclaim your focus and attention and help you navigate this world of distraction. However, I steer clear of recommending well-worn techniques like mindfulness and meditation, not because they are not effective for some people, but because these methods have already been written about ad nauseam. Indistractable helped me realize technology was not the real reason I got distracted and struggled to get things done. You’ll learn powerful strategies to help you recognize and overcome your personal triggers and weak areas and be held accountable for making the changes needed to become the most effective version of yourself. Let go of this belief as it encourages you to believe you have a reason to quit because you have used up your willpower.
