I stand and hold out my hand. She gives me a skeptical look, but takes it and lets me pull her to her feet. I put my other hand in the air. ‘Bronwyn Rojas, I solemnly swear not to murder you today or at any point in the future. Deal?’ This book was such a disappointment because I was REALLY enjoying it up until the last 3rd or so. I seriously thought this would be a 4 or 5 star read. However, upon finishing, I strongly believe that this book should not have been published as is. It's ignorant and damaging.

I like your horrible taste in movies and the way you never sugarcoat anything and the fact that you have an actual lizard. It concerns me you’re avoiding a promise not to murder me.” ― Karen M. McManus, One of Us Is Lying Review Also, can we please NOT make the only queer character in the cast a horrible character who cheats and hurts people? AND can we not make the character's coming-out scene a bigger twist than the actual murderer reveal? This book also does some serious vilifying of mental illness, but I won't get started on that rant. With Simon's death fresh on their minds, the students of Bayview High are intrigued—but not intimidated—by the new faceless dealer. But then Phoebe doesn't respond to her Truth or Dare request, and the dealer reveals a secret that's way too cutting to be fun... And the mystery, where is it? I felt like it was too obvious. There was absolutely no subtlety. When I read a mystery book, I want the plot twist to actually be a twist. Is that too much to ask for?

Trigger and Content Warnings - Loss of a loved one, PTSD, Sexual harassment, Stalking, Concussion, Death, Bullying, Luekemia, Relapse, Vomiting, Addiction, Depression NOW A MAJOR NETFLIX SERIES. This stunning collector's edition of the internationally bestselling YA smash hit, ONE OF US IS LYING, contains a thrilling BONUS chapter! One of us is lying novel is based on a dark teen drama of the same name that was released on October 7, 2021. One of us is lying was published on 29 May 2017, by Penguin Random House and was created by Erica Saleh. Actually, there were many opportunities to go down the typical YA-route, but thankfully that didn't happen. I was very (pleasantly) surprised at that!

This includes Maeve, whose older sister, Bronwyn, was one of the original Bayview Four, as well as recent outcast, Phoebe, and boy next door, Knox. Karen McManus did a great job with this book. It's amazing—she basically took most of the typical high school stereotypes, yet gave her characters a little more depth than you'd expect. Even though you probably will have suspicions of how the plot will unfold (and most of those suspicions will be correct), it's still interesting the way McManus pulls everything together. I couldn't get enough of this book, and even though the story wrapped up, I wouldn't have minded if it ran longer. Admittedly, I wasn’t sure what it would be about. I felt like the story had been pretty well wrapped up but I wasn’t about to NOT read it… I mean that would be crazy. Addy is terrified of Jake finding out that she cheated on him through the About That post, so she tells him herself. Jake is furious and breaks up with her. At school, their shared group of friends (except for Cooper) treats her poorly. And then one day an anonymous text appears on students’ phones, initiating a game of truth or dare. A student will be chosen, they’ll have a fixed amount of time to decide between truth or dare, and if they fail to answer the question or complete the dare, a painful truth will be revealed about them—to the entire school. Some students want to report this to the principal immediately, but others worry that might lead to everyone's phones getting confiscated again.

And outsider Simon, creator of the notorious gossip app at Bayview High, won't ever talk about any of them again.

The mystery wasn’t as twisty as in the first book in my opinion. I figured out who was responsible for the game fairly early on but figuring out the why and how was what kept me glued. Seeing how it all came together was fun, especially once the dares took on a deadly twist. Leave it to the kids of Bayview to turn a game into something sinister. Of course McManus threw in a lil curveball at the end that I totally didn’t see coming - bonus! Ya’ll know how much I love a fun, plot twisty but fitting surprise!! 😳 ⁣ Goldberg, Lesley (15 August 2019). " 'Queer as Folk' Reboot, 'One of Us Is Lying' Move to NBCUniversal's Streaming Service". The Hollywood Reporter. Archived from the original on 26 April 2021 . Retrieved 26 April 2021. Nate has a series of casual sexual encounters with girls whom he meets at parties. He stops after he and Bronwyn become friends. He and Bronwyn have romantic feelings for each other and kiss. They break up after Nate is released from jail. Bronwyn briefly dates and kisses another boy, but eventually she and Nate reunite. It turns out that Bronwyn, Cooper, Addy, and Nate all have secrets they'd prefer to have kept hidden. In some cases these aren't even the secrets that Simon threatened to expose. But when the truth is revealed it will impact their relationships with each other and their friends, as well as their futures. Can they handle it? Well, and that’s basically the concept on which this book is built. Who is going to be next and will they choose truth or dare? I’ve to admit this was an intriguing concept and that I really liked the characters. I already loved Maeve in “One of Us Is Lying” and Knox and Phoebe were two really likable voices as well. I loved that Phoebe was a very unapologetic and straight forward character and that she challenged the narrow-minded perception of people. She’s actually a feminist and I loved that about her. XD
