Description

I know that a lot of you love books that give detailed descriptions of the character's surroundings. I know, I know, I know! The lore of magic and magicians is a wonderful unusual method that makes them unusual and exotic while not being inaccessibly legendary.

As I explore possible book-to-screen adaptations in this column, I’ll try to give a realistic estimate of each property’s likelihood to make it to theaters or streamers. Please, for the love of God, don't spam my review thread with your comments on how I just don't understand the beauty of the lush world Lynch built. Deathbed promise to his mother." Bug drove his pole down into the canal, struggled against it for a moment, and managed to shove them along once more. "She kept the Vadran religion after she married the old Don Salvara. So he leaves an offering at the Vadran temple once a week and gets home as fast as he can so nobody pays too much attention to him. Dammit, Jean, I already know this shit. Why would I be here if you didn't trust me? And why am I the one who gets to push this stupid barge all the way to the market?" So, I was surprised to discover we owned this book, since it's a very well known book but nobody in my house had ever mentioned it to me.

Maps of Tal Verrar and the Sea of Brass

its masterfully chaotic - so many subplots, so many characters, so much world-building. theres never a dull moment. The writing itself is excellent. I don't recall any obviously awkward turns of phrase. The imagery is quite well done. Action scenes make sense within the story, and have real consequences as opposed to just being thrown in for some excitement. The core of the story is clever, funny, charming, heart-wrenching, and fun...once you scrape away about half of the words.

As I’ve said above, Lynch fuses different genres and tweaks storytelling expectations with his fantasy. He isn’t afraid to be different, and his work feels wholly unique. It’s another month and since March just started I’m once again trying to reduce my TBR with my own blog meme “Hugs’n’kisses OR Dismissed by the Missus/Messrs” . You’re probably thinking, Isn’t this just a book about thieves? Why are you so emotionally attached? The story itself is interesting because it is not what one expects from the initial promises. The Gentlemen Bastards are grifters, and the story begins with the group running a long con on one of the nobleman. Though, about 30% of the way in, a new plot wave sweeps in and takes the characters for different a ride. From a meta point of view, this is unusual precisely because it creates a number of promises to the reader that go, not so much unfulfilled, as meaningless to the true story. I suspect many that don't like this book don't like it for just this reason.Your mother was in an understandable hurry to get rid of you, Bug." Jean's voice was soft and even and wildly incongruous. He spoke like a teacher of music or a copier of scrolls. "We're not. So indulge me once more with proof of your penetrating comprehension of our game." Bug sighed. "I make the signal when Salvara's on his way out of the Temple of Fortunate Waters. I keep an eye out for anyone else trying to walk past the alley, especially the city watch. If anybody tries it, I jump down from the temple roof with a longsword and cut their bloody heads off where they stand." A love child of Ocean’s Eleven and The Godfather. With blood, deaths, betrayals, money, and drowning in horse urine . . . and it’s SO. GOOD‘ Goodreads reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ If you're a fan of over-flowery prose, characters with little personality, and a plot that contains all the subtleties of a bull in a China ship, then this book is perfect for you.

I liked the descriptions myself, but they could be a bit much if you're not into descriptive novels. I'm on the fence - descriptions annoy me sometimes. These worked for me, but they're a biiiiiig part of the book. Steals too much,” the Eyeless Priest mused. “Of all the complaints I never thought I’d hear from a man who trains little thieves for a living.”*** We’re a different sort of thief here, Lamora. Deception and misdirection are our tools. We don’t believe in hard work when a false face and a good line of bullshit can do so much more.” And his series title is better than mine too. "Gentleman Bastard" beats "Kingkiller Chronicles" hands-down.

The urban environment (essentially a dark, gritty version of renaissance Venice) is completely immersive and transported me into a different time and place - I was never jarred by modern-sounding dialog or props. But there are whispers of a challenge to the Capa's power. A challenge from a man no one has ever seen, a man no blade can touch. The Grey King is coming.

Yep, that's right, excitement is me ☢ sarcasm alert ☢ And that is all. I have nothing else to say about this book. BUT. I'd hate to see you go so soon, so I shall (very generously, I might add) share my Delightful Lamora Reading Experience (DLRE™) with you. I suffered through 31% of this, there's no reason why you shouldn't suffer through this review as well. Please don't thank me, I'm generous like that.

It isn’t necessarily about the money but more about the challenge and excitement of the con itself. This is one reason why I had a good time in this story.
