All of these professional-grade speakers have held up well in our studios and in Cinema Sound member studios. Be sure not to overdo the bass to compensate for little speakers' inability to create low frequency energy. It’s actually an ingenious way to keep costs down without losing quality: have one amp in one speaker to power two.

Bluetooth streaming lets you check mixes over Bluetooth to make sure they sound great in every listening scenario. It is apparent that JBL have put some real design effort into managing some of the issues - the bass driver has a specialised surround design that is clearly intended to ameliorate some of the nasties. Sounds is crystal clear and more then enough bass and overall volume for pairing with a Mac and Logic Pro X for mixing and music creation. So much so that we usually give him the really expensive monitors to review at his Invada Studios – the prime place to line them up against other just-as-expensive options.

There’s little else in the way of controls (a good thing perhaps) with no EQ shelving around the back and just a headphone socket and volume rotary around the front of the Master speaker. The 104-BTs certainly mellow over time, so you shouldn’t judge them straight from the box, but that polishing of the register never quite reaches some frequencies.

The world’s top recording studios and touring artists rely on JBL monitors to deliver unparalleled fidelity and performance. Even though the plasma TV is a little thicker than the standard LED flat-screen, its speakers are wimpy and it's hard to hear dialog across the room and forget about bass-heavy sound effects or music. The JBL 104-BT Reference Monitors' integrated 60-watt Class D power amplifier distributes a potent 30 watts per speaker. I feel as though putting some juice behind them will make them fill in and sound good, but it, unfortunately, doesn't do that. That, you might think, was a reasonably throwaway statement, but Pickford knows his stuff – I mean really knows his stuff. What’s more, though the low-frequency extension is inevitably constrained by driver size, the frequency balance is good at both low and medium volume levels, handy if you’re spending long periods in front of them. You can then choose which finance term you'd like to apply for, and change your deposit if you wish.
