Looks pretty good and the single versions are what they are but I have had two boxes and both are as warped as they could be and still be playable. For the cost that this box set is going for currently I have to say it's not totally worth getting unless you're one who HAS to have it regardless. It was most likely pressed at United (where Universal farms out a lot of it's vinyl product), and although they're known for poor quality, this set (at least my copy) is fine - thick vinyl, free of defects, well-centered, and only the slightest amount of surface noise, which may be remedied by a cleaning. I mean cool if you still want fold downs, but if you think youre getting all dedicated mono , you are not.

Content-wise, this is identical to the 4CD set from 2015, although pedants might note that at 43 tracks, this set has one more ‘track’ than the CD package due to the 37-minute version of Sister Ray needing to be split into two parts, on LP 6! And the corresponding records in each box were warped in the exact same way suggesting it's a pressing issue. It's nice to hear the recently unearthed original mixes of some of these songs and the superior newly remixed versions, all of which first appeared on the pricy deluxe sets of White Light/White Heat and the self-titled album that came out in recent years.Versions of tracks from that have appeared in various CD formats that its confusing to know which take was released on which CD reissue etc. Literally containing live versions of all the ‘hits’, it shows the band – then containing Doug Yule, who’d recently replaced John Cale, on guitars and keyboards – in full flight, performing tracks from each of their albums.

The box is solid, the jackets are solid, the booklet is stellar and so far so are the pressings and sound. I’d genuinely like to hear an original US pressing and see if it sounds any different than this one. The Velvets weren't known for Audiophile recording methods, so I'll go out on a limb and say, this sounds like the VU.My only complaint is that The Gift sounds muddy and you can’t make out a word of what John Cale is saying. Having said that I'm a sucker for any permutation of the VU1968/1969 tracks of their 'lost 4th album' on Verve and had to get this.

The Velvet Underground toured extensively in 1969, but choose to do a residency in San Francisco in November and early December over 18 nights over four separate engagements, the first at the Family Dog, the rest at the fabled North Beach club the Matrix. It would have been good to get some new content in the booklet (it's just the essay from the earlier CD release) and have it in hardback (again: rather "tat"). I was actually HOPING they were mono, but didn't figure that out until a scan of the barcodes brought me here. Which, as I stated previously, most fans probably won't want to do just to get the extra material, as they may already have better versions of the original albums. of 4 sides are all available on the Velvet Underground s/t Super Deluxe version and aside from known songs like Foggy Notion, One of These Days, and Ocean, most were outtakes for good reason. Some of the other tracks stick to the original 1969 mixes, but all in all, even if you have tracks elsewhere, it is a fine compilation to have. It was cut by Ron Mcmaster (RM in the deadwax), and yes, it was probably done from digital files, but this set does not sound bad by any means. There doesn't appear to be any information on the covers or labels about this, and I imagine one could pick them up assuming they were stereo.
