It was, she reflected, quite possibly the stupidest thing she’d done in her life, and she had to admit that she’d made a few foolish decisions in her day.

She did not fight him as he pulled her to the surface; indeed, she had already lost consciousness and was nothing more than a dead weight in his arms. She still held a prominent place in society; the Bridgertons were universally adored and respected (and occasionally feared), and Eloise’s sunny and irrepressible personality was such that everyone sought out her company, spinsterish age or no. I won't lie - I kinda, sorta fell in love with Eloise in the netflix adaption, and I couldn't wait to get to her story, and it did not disappoint. The Bridgertons, her popular series of historical romance, is currently in production by Shondaland as a Netflix original series starring Julie Andrews, Phoebe Dynevor, and Rége-Jean Page. Her four brothers were all big, strong men, with broad shoulders and large hands that would surely mangle the poor thing in a heartbeat. And she’d been corresponding with a complete stranger for over a year; surely she was a little desperate? As with all the Bridgerton novels there’s a light side and a more serious side which grounds the book making it more than just a light romance. It was common courtesy, or even if it wasn’t (and Phillip was quite certain he didn’t know the full etiquette of one’s wife dying), it still somehow seemed like the right thing to do. And then he shows Eloise his idea of "seeing if we suit" by diverting her into the library and engaging non-sex sex to give her an orgasm.

Instead of listening to her concerns, Phillip had a nice little tantrum wherein he claimed that, because he had previously had a much unhappier existence with his ex-wife, Eloise had no right to complain about the shortcomings in their current relationship. I thought you didn’t mind the gray,” Miles said conversationally, once they’d resumed their trek to Phillip’s greenhouse. His hair looked in dire need of a good trim, and his skin showed signs of a faint tan, which was impressive considering how little sunshine they'd enjoyed lately. She complains about these problems in their marriage (no communication, he isn't present, he leaves childcare in the nurse's hands and to her without a second thought, he is never willing to deal with things and when she brings up problems, he dismisses her as talking too much and being insane and a typical crazy woman) and what does he do? He openly admits that he only wanted a wife to be a mother to his unruly children and to “take over all the annoying little tasks of life”—takes courage. The men who’d previously sought her favor were at least familiar with the London scene and knew what they were getting into; poor Sir Phillip, who had –by his own admission in his letters– not set foot in London since his school days, and never participated in the social season, would be ambushed. The “To Sir Phillip, With Love” is an emotional roller coaster of a story, which unfolds in a non- linear manner. Then here comes Eloise, a ray of sunshine in his life and that’s what she feels like throughout the book.

And the worst thing is, he succeeds in his emotional manipulation, because she cries and they make love and whatnot. and before she knew it, she was in a hired carriage in the middle of the night, on her way to meet the man she hoped might be her perfect match. More intriguing by the day, frankly, as she grew more and more restless, more dissatisfied with the lot in life that she had to admit she’d chosen. And he certainly should have mentioned that he had two young – and decidedly unruly – children, as much in need of a mother as Phillip is in need of a wife. He hadn’t wanted to use the main entrance, where he might be seen by his children, and besides, the kitchen door was closer by a good forty yards. This was one of those books which was so readable that I would have read it in one sitting if only real life did not intervene. It was time to take her life into her own hands, time to control her destiny, rather than attending ball after ball in the vain hope that the perfect man would suddenly materialize before her, never mind that there was never anybody new in London, and after a full decade out in society, she’d already met everyone of the appropriate age and gender to marry. I would like to be able to give him some leeway by saying that everything that he did was a product of the time period except 1) No, and 2) None of it has been in the other books, so why is it suddenly appearing in this one? But he sat, anyway, twisted like a pretzel, and forced himself to meet their gazes as he forced the words out. She had been intrigued by Sir Phillip’s reply, especially his use of the Latin, and she had immediately penned her own response.
