I am delighted with my choice to read this book on a holiday after slogging through a dozen books I had to abandon. The book flits back to recorded memories of times in the Balkans war, documenting the horrific crimes of mass rape, murder and genocide that went on.

I correctly assumed that McDermid wasn't going to cheat by making the murderer someone who's only introduced in the last five pages, so the possible suspect list was very short indeed. The Skeleton Road , now available in paperback, is a gripping standalone novel about a cold case that links back to the Balkan Wars of the 1990s.Val McDermid uses a clear but powerful language, her writing is simple but effective and she has a brilliant way to get the reader into the pages. If nothing else, the book did make me interested in learning more about the Third Balkan War, which makes it a worthy read.

Personligen hade jag gärna sluppit sidospåret med de två advokaterna från Internationella krigsförbrytartribunalen. Meanwhile, two members of an international war crimes tribunal also are seeking Petrovic as they try to find out who is meting out "rough justice" by killing people accused of war atrocities before they can be indicted. The Skeleton Road is smartly written with historical tie-ins, multiple love interests, and a hard-edged unsentimental finish.

Seeing the Last Kids set out and explore outside of Wakefield was such an amazing experience to read about and I think it took every creative opportunity it could to make it great. Although the book is described as a stand-alone and can absolutely be read as such, for those of us who are taken with DCI Karen Pirie, the first book featuring her is A Darker Domain. Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook).
