About this deal

He gulps down all kinds of books, from storybooks to dictionaries and discovers that the more he eats, the smarter he gets. I believe the last picture book I reviewed was A Child of Books by Oliver Jeffers and here I am with his earlier gem. Until the day, that is, that the knowledge he was ingesting began to become a little mixed, and he began to feel a little ill as a result of his unusual diet. Now living in New York, he works as a painter, designer, printmaker and installation artist, but remains very busy making picture books.

Henry loves books but not in the same way as most people: Henry loves to eat books… He starts with just a word, then sentences until he’s built up enough stamina to eat up a whole book. Oliver Jeffers has won numerous awards and delighted millions of kids and parents alike with his beautifully hand illustrated stories.Common Sense is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of all kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in the 21st century. Then the children drew their illustrations directly onto the dried paper, some chose to use oils, acrylics, charcoal etc. That's why we've added a new "Diverse Representations" section to our reviews that will be rolling out on an ongoing basis. How To Catch A Star is a beautiful debut picture book from an extremely talented and innovative illustrator.

Oliver Jeffers sophisticated illustrations are witty and absorbing: the bite out of the corner of the book is a joke on its own! Henry discovers his unusual taste by mistake one day, and is soon swept up in his new-found passion -- gorging on every delicious book in sight! I like that Henry wants to be smart, and that Henry likes books, and that he figures out another way to use them. This allows his brain to do the most interesting thing, it internalises all the info out of each book until. Henry enjoyed it so much that he continued eating words until eventually, he was eating whole books! The snappy text works well for reading aloud, but older children will enjoy exploring the subtle details hidden in the illustrations and backgrounds.
