Both box sets include three blu-rays (unavailable anywhere else), details of which are scant but which clearly will be devoted to the three types of show. In 1990 and in 1991 Eric Clapton played 24 nights at the Royal Albert Hall performing with different line-ups and sets featuring Blues, Rock and a full Orchestra. Both versions come with three Blu-ray discs for the video content, a hardbound book, and an individually numbered lithograph featuring a photograph of Clapton by Carl Studna.

The second six nights featured a nine-piece band, with the four-piece band joined by Phil Palmer on guitar, Alan Clark on keyboards, Ray Cooper on percussion, and backing vocalists Katie Kissoon and Tessa Niles. Clapton surrounded himself with superlative musicians for the performances on The Definitive 24 Nights as the roster includes greats like Johnnie Johnson, Jimmie Vaughan, Chuck Leavell, Phil Collins, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, Nathan East, Greg Phillinganes, Steve Ferrone, Ray Cooper, and Jerry Portnoy. Since Clapton’s debut at the Royal Albert Hall with the Yardbirds in 1964, he has performed there over 200 times, more than any other artist as he also holds the record for the longest run of concerts at the venue – he set it in 1990 with 18 shows, then broke it the following year with 24 concerts. Given Clapton’s recent travails — the accidental death of Stevie Ray Vaughan after a gig with Clapton, and then the death of Clapton’s four-year-old son — our collective heart goes out to the artist. But the celebratory aspects of the album are tempered by harsh realities, clouding the separation of art and artist.

He’s expanding upon fans’ access to those shows by releasing the limited edition box set, The Definitive 24 Nights, that features six hours of music and 35 unreleased performances between the 1990 and 1991 sets. Designed less like a greatest-hits package than a thoughtful selection of songs, 24 Nights tells just one version of the Clapton story. For those performances, Clapton’s nine-piece band was joined by the National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by legendary composer Michael Kamen. Each night featured him performing a career-spanning set with one of three lineups – a rock band, a blues band [and] an orchestra conducted by Michael Kamen.

Following a record-setting run of 12 concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in 1989, Clapton broke his own record in 1990, playing 18 nights at the venue between 18 January and 10 February 1990, and again in 1991, playing 24 nights between 5 February and 9 March 1991. The film features 17 hits from across his repertoire showing Clapton at his most exhilarating, collaborating with top musicians. At the ripe age of forty-six, Clapton is a model of resiliency, riffing with the same intensity of the young “godly” Clapton and also embodying the art of survival with dignity. Clapton’s groundbreaking run of 24 concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall were some of the most ambitious shows of his career.

Recorded in the cavernous Royal Albert Hall over the course of twenty-four concerts in 1990 and ’91, the package bears a biographical imprint by evenly traversing Clapton’s various forays into blues, pop and beyond. Warner Records is giving the concerts the release they deserve this summer with THE DEFINITIVE 24 NIGHTS. This limited-edition boxed set includes nearly six hours of live music and 35 unreleased performances. The packaging is wonderful, with many photos and all of the information about the 2 years of Albert Hall concerts. I wish the Pink Floyd guys would take a cue from Clapton and release a massive live set from the 70s like this or Crossroads II instead of a severely abbreviated single LP of half a concert. For the rock concert, Clapton played many of his classic songs including “Sunshine Of Your Love,” “Can’t Find My Way Home,” and “Wonderful Tonight. Once appeared in a Cure video dressed as a cowboy, and thinks any situation can be improved by the introduction of cats. The collection distills Clapton’s 1990-91 Albert Hall residencies using the best performances from the rock, blues, and orchestral nights to create full concerts for each genre. His voice sits somewhere between grit and silk, the eloquence of his guitar somewhere between urgency and poise.
