The title role was performed by Elliott Hanna, who at age 11 was the youngest actor to ever play Billy. Nearly a decade on after Billy Elliot the Musical opened in the West End, the piece is looking as healthy as ever, not least because of the way librettist and lyricist Lee Hall, composer Elton John, director Stephen Daldry and choreographer Peter Darling have managed to combine the raw reality of struggling through the 1984-85 miners’ strike with the dreams of a boy who lives to dance.

In 2009, the production received fifteen Tony Award nominations, tying with The Producers for the most nominations ever received by a Broadway show, [32] and winning ten. Within the social context of the 1984–85 miner's strike, Billy Elliot's personal struggle to continue dancing is contrasted powerfully to choreographed violence due to the strike. The musical opened at Sydney's Capitol Theatre on 13 November 2007, directed by Daldry in association with Julian Webber, and choreographed by Darling. In May 2016, the Grandstreet Theatre in Helena, Montana, became the first American, non-professional theatre company to stage this musical. The music is by Elton John, and the book and lyrics are by Lee Hall, who wrote the film's screenplay. The production had been slated to run through July 2010 but was extended to the middle of January 2011, by popular demand.

Billy goes into a rage ("Angry Dance"), and for nearly a year, stays away from anything related to ballet. Billu Elliot closed in Madrid on 10 March 2020, when performances were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. if you came from somewhere you never thought you'd get out of till the one day you found that thing that you know could be your ticket, get ready for tears.

When the day of the Royal Ballet School audition comes, the police come through the village, injuring Tony. She reveals to Billy the abuse she suffered at the hands of her late husband, but that she found great joy in dance ("Grandma's Song"). Motherless eleven-year-old Billy is required to stay behind after his boxing class and finds his way into a ballet class run by Mrs Wilkinson. the miners strikes, being on the breadline, the grim north and being a youngster trying to break out of a situation.

The producers of Billy Elliot the Musical sincerely regret to advise that as a result of the Government's announcement. The most critical review was one published in the National Post: "The signal achievement of Billy Elliot The Musical is to be even phonier than the movie it's based on. Billy's subversion of traditional masculine "gender performativity" [74] is highlighted against the contrast of Durham's extremely masculine working-class society.

The screening included interviews with Elton John, Lee Hall, and Stephen Daldry, and a backstage tour with Elliott Hanna. The show closed just over a month early in Melbourne, on 16 March 2020, due to audience restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was announced shortly after that the cancelled performances would be made up for during the final season of production in 2019. I liked the film, enjoying the dance sequences and the aforementioned performances, but I wondered about why the film needed to include uncertainty about Billy's sexuality. He begins learning from and bonding with Mrs Wilkinson while he develops an impressive routine for his audition ("Born to Boogie"). On 28 November, Elton John watched the show from a private box and surprised the cast and audience by participating in the final bows. Wilkinson, Avi Kushnir as Billy's father, Oshri Cohen as Tony and Dina Doron as Billy's grandmother.

Daldry is also on hand to explain why the stage version is in many ways more complete than the movie. In a lovely nod to the stage show, the credits included members of the West End cast who had not appeared in the live film. The cast also included Hernán Mendoza, Carlos Fonseca, first actress Norma Lazareno and Concepción Márquez as Billy's father, Tony and Billy's grandmother respectively.
