Description

With a frequency response of 53 Hz to 50,000 Hz, these speakers will give you a broad range of audio frequencies, from deeper bass to high treble. This lends better to a rich and immersive listening experience, regardless of the type of music or audio content you play on them. Impedance and sensitivity Ultimately, the Sony SS-CS5 makes high-quality listening experiences accessible to anyone, which is why so many music lovers have fallen in love with it over the years. Compared to other bookshelf speakers While the bass response may not be as deep or powerful as some other models, it’s still adequate if you just want speakers for casual listening or for if you don’t prioritize bass-heavy audio. The bass reflex system helps enhance the low-frequency performance. Setup and integration

For optimal sound quality, placement is key—try positioning the speakers at ear level and slightly angled towards the listening area. The performance that the Sony SSCS5 has to offer to you is nothing but amazing. This bookshelf speaker works great with other stereo speakers and it does a good job when so. The sound that it produces will expand through the entire room, so you’ll feel like you’re at a concert or in the movie you’re watching. These speakers feature a bass reflex system designed to enhance the low-frequency performance. The system uses a carefully tuned port to reduce distortion and improve overall bass response. Sound quality and performance At 7.125″ wide by 13.25″ high by 8.75″ deep and weighing about 9.4 pounds each, these speakers are an ideal size if you want them on shelves or speaker stands.

Performance

Measurements that you are about to see were performed using the Klippel Near-field Scanner (NFS). This is a robotic measurement system that analyzes the speaker all around and is able (using advanced mathematics and dual scan) to subtract room reflections (so where I measure it doesn't matter). It also measures the speaker at close distance ("near-field") which sharply reduces the impact of room noise. Both of these factors enable testing in ordinary rooms yet results that can be more accurate than an anechoic chamber. In a nutshell, the measurements show the actual sound coming out of the speaker independent of the room. Wide frequency response: The broad frequency range covered by these speakers allows them to deliver a rich and immersive listening experience. Here's the process for modifying the crossover (shorting out one resistor). This mod depends on the frame (or some other baffle widening) being in place. This mod by itself likely wouldn't be an improvement to the spectral balance of the speaker. With a high-frequency response up to 50 kHz, music feels vibrant and energizing, and the transparent sound is further enhanced by the film condensers and woofer’s silicon steel plate, which improve the soundstage and mitigate resonances.

Next, use a flat head screwdriver (or similar) and something to protect the front baffle of the speaker (I used a small piece of thin cardboard). Pry up the woofer where its dowels are glued into the cabinet at the bottom, left, and right. The glue makes an interesting ccchhhhh sound as it releases. I have included a picture that shows the attachment locations in green, and one dowel in red. Remove the tweeter baffle to get an angle on the dowel at the top. Pry up the last dowel, and remove the woofer. The Sony SSCS5 speakers have an impedance of 6 ohms and a sensitivity of 87 dB, making them suitable for pairing with a variety of amplifiers or receivers. The impedance indicates the electrical resistance of the speakers, while the sensitivity represents how efficiently they can convert the electrical signal into sound. Bass reflex systemIt's a very high value performer that already measures and sounds very good. It has a peak at 1 kHz, and a polite voicing that falls off a little bit at higher frequencies. There's little output below 70 hz, but a subwoofer can solve that issue, or it could be used without one in an office or dorm room or some place where deep bass isn't required.

Furthermore, a pair of Elac B5.2 will perform magnificently wherever you place them in your room, while the SS-CS5 might require a bit more trial and error. They’re both exceptional speakers, but to me, the winner is the Elac B5.2. The ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 bookshelf speakers are a step up in terms of price and performance compared to the Sony SSCS5. These speakers feature a custom-designed tweeter and woofer, along with a sophisticated crossover, which will give you a more refined sound. The ELAC speakers also have a larger cabinet and a more robust build quality, which contributes to their improved bass response. Read the full Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 review Who are the Sony SS-CS5 bookshelf speakers best suited for? I had a pair of Sony's SS-CS5 bookshelf speakers to evaluate, and the first thing that stood out was that it's a three-way design. Most three-ways have woofer, midrange, and tweeter drivers. But the SS-CS5 sports a 5-inch foamed mica-reinforced woofer, 1-inch dome tweeter, and a 0.75-inch dome "super" tweeter. So it's more like a two-way design, with a super-tweeter that extends the high-frequency response up to 50KHz. Now sure, humans can, at best, only hear up to 20KHz. But I find that speakers and headphones with extended high-frequency responses tend to sound better in the frequencies we can hear. They don't sound brighter, just clearer. You won’t have to make a separate shelf for these speakers. And as they are light you can conveniently place them on your tabletop. Polk T15

Design

In terms of sound across the room, the SS-CS5 performs well in most environments, and given its small size, it’s the perfect speaker for small or crowded spaces. The Sony SSCS5 has multiple great features. This bookshelf speaker has 3 different drivers—a woofer, a tweeter, and a super tweeter.
