My initial plan was that I would record the signal from the guitar amp at the same time as recording the direct signal from the iRig – thus allowing me to give clients both the dry/direct sound (so that they can apply their own effects, pedalboards, amps etc) – plus the sound/tone of my amp (with minimal wetness). Once the above is set, view your AmpliTube Settings > Audio/MIDI Settings window once again. Under Input channels, you can now view and select iRig as your input. A digital rig with physical presence

Traditionally, these instruments (especially electric guitar) are plugged into an amplifier and then miked up. It is common practice in professional recordings because it yields the best sound. Without registering the product the accompanying software cannot be registered and is therefore only available in demo mode for a limited amount of days (9 if I remember correctly). In fact, it got to the stage where Logic Pro wouldn’t recognise the software. Recording acoustic instruments or your vocals has been made much easier with the introduction of USB microphones, as mentioned in the previous instalment of this series. However, recording instruments such as electric guitar, bass or keyboards, can still seem a little daunting.

As I mentioned in earlier paragraphs, the best "feature" that the iRig HD 2 provides is the convenience and ease-of-use that you get from being able to play guitar through your computer or mobile device. I was able to enjoy a full range of effects and amp models, on my couch, while my wife watched TV and my kids slept. Like the Scarlett, it’s small size and weight also means the Duo-Capture EX is built for the road and can be powered by batteries if required. I used a set of over-ear Skull Candy headphones, which sounded fine. Most any over-hear headphone or earbud set will do.

We recommend uninstalling the iRig Pro DUO ASIO drivers if you want to use the general iRig ASIO drivers. Both ASIO drivers will work with iRig Pro DUO and iRig Pro DUO I/O; but using the general iRig ASIO will allow it to work with other iRig models.

The iRig is fantastic for its price, but there are limitations. For those of you who are interested in something more serious and “professional”, with a bit more money you can dive into the world of USB Audio Interfaces. The iRig ASIO drivers enable professional level audio control over your iRig hardware. With the iRig ASIO drivers, it allows for adjustable buffer sizes and optimal control for ultra low level latency. Overall, performance with ASIO is better and much more stable, resulting in less dropouts and audio processing issues. Tip: The iRig 2 should be used on BandLab in our Mix Editor with input monitoring ON, to be able to listen to your playing without any latency.Note: Do NOT enable the 'Hardware Buffer' under Options in the ASIO4ALL panel, as this causes poor performance. The iRig 2 will then ensure you always retain a superb, immaculate signal path. Better still, the IK Multimedia iRig 2 allows you to connect to an amplifier and even connect headphones thanks to a range of outputs that accommodate any setting, whether that's in the studio, stage or just jamming with friends.
