Churchill is present but it’s not a biography. Sometimes you deal with history before him and then you go right up to the present day. What was your intention in writing in that way? The upshot is a skewed picture of Britain. We get the impression of a society riven by class conflict instead of the one where, in the 70 years after 1924, the year Churchill re-joined the Conservative Party, the Tories were out of power for only 18. It was, moreover, not until 1945 that a majority of Britain’s working class voted for Labour. Until then, it appears, the majority preferred Liberal and Tory paternalism. Historical balance sheets get a bad name, but surely, they’re more useful than hagiographies and obloquies. Indeed, a balance sheet can be an invitation to nuance. The frustration is curious, given some of Ali’s works to date. The Clash of Fundamentalisms (2002) was excellent in its scope of history, and The Obama Syndrome (2010) was a skilled takedown of the forty-forth president. This latest book, however, tries to straddle two very different approaches and comes out struggling. Ali may think that Churchill was a catastrophically conceited leader with a penchant for warmongering and white supremacy, but that does little—following his logic—to explain why Churchill is so beloved at home and respected by the world.I said bluntly that I thought the notion of Anglo-Saxon superiority, inherent in Churchill’s approach, would be offensive to many of the nations of the world as well as to a number of people in the United States.
