As a consequence, the impacts of climate change are becoming worse and we saw temperatures reach an incredible 40C in the UK last summer. The ide a for the book – the first in a new series of Ladybird Expert Books for adults – emerged after Prince Charles returned from the Paris Climate Change Summit of 2015 and discussed the issue with his friend and former equerry, Sir Nicholas Soames, MP.

I hope people find the book presents the evidence in an accessible way that enables readers to come to their own conclusions regarding the causes and consequences of climate change, as well as the scale and urgency of the challenge it poses. For a scientist awarded an OBE in 2016 for services to science and the public communication of science, co-authoring a lay guide to climate change – and for such an iconic book brand – was too good an opportunity to miss. Dr Tony Juniper said it is vital that the world takes action now to avoid the worst consequences of global heating, and part of any plan must include empowering young people. I assume there is no mention of any wildlife that benefits from climate change. There are lots of things that do better in a warmer climate. 2016 was “the hottest year eva!”. It was also the year with the highest crop production eva! But one never hears anything of this kind of good news in the MSM.Our shops at Laura and Burra are now closed. We are always happy to provide any required images/ information of any listed book. So who were the target audience for the Ladybird book? Judging by the media coverage, the royalist/centre-right press took a significant interest. From the Telegraph to Mail on Sunday, there was sensible coverage, including an article in The Sun that discussed the book in the context of recent flooding events in the UK. There were a few obligatory snide comments about the prince’s penchant for expressing his political opinions, but broadly speaking the press coverage was positive. So the authors clearly got the tone – and the visual narrative – about right in this respect.

Libby Walden, Commissioning Editor for Ladybird said the Ladybird title has a long history of making non-fiction accessible for children. We start with the facts about warming of the Earth and where the evidence comes from. What might be, and are already, the impacts on our lives now and on future generations? Wildlife gets appropriate mentions as an indicator of climate change and also a victim. The book then moves on to solutions – those we can each make individually and those we as communities, nations and as a species need to make together. Other royal weddings were later accompanied by a similar book, including the wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson in 1986. I feel a strong sense of responsibility as a climate scientist to communicate widely the findings of my research.

A Ladybird Book: Climate Change" includes an Afterword in which The Prince Charles, the former Prince of Wales sets out a personal message to readers. (The Afterword was written last year, when His Majesty The King was still The Prince of Wales.) This is a Ladybird book – it’s not overloaded with words. If you have a long commute into work you could polish it off on one day with no problem at all. It’s a slim volume, nicely illustrated and written with admirable clarity. There has been no more effective or committed champion of this cause than the former Prince of Wales and I am sure this book and his words will help to keep things moving in the right direction.” Any quoted International postage is for parcels up to 500gm weight.
