Description

At the end of the game, the murder will have either been caught or will have evaded the investigators. If the murder evaded the investigators the murder and accomplice have won. If the murder was caught by pinpointing both needed pieces of evidence, then they have one more chance to win, they may discuss with their accomplice and choose a character they think the witness maybe if they are correct the murder and accomplice win. If the witness is left alive, then all investigators and forensic scientist win the game. VARIANT

We’ll assign the Forensic Scientist card then randomize the rest. And in our subsequent play (because we know there will be another game) that role will move one player to the left with the other roles still being randomized. After the final marker has been placed, the Forensic Scientist should allow a brief period for discussion of the evidence and then ask each player to present their opinions about the crime. There is no set amount of players for deception, however, it is recommended that there be at least four players. If there are less than four players, the game may be less fun and more difficult. What Does The Witness Do In Deception? The next stage of set up involves the role cards. The number of investigators can change depending on the number of players. The Forensic Scientist places the subsequent markers based on the discussion, so as to narrow down the investigation. The Forensic Scientist should give the group a moment to discuss the new evidence before again calling on each player to present their opinions as in step 2a-II. If that seems too tough for the murderer, you can always add some extra roles: an accomplice helps out the murderer, giving them cover for their fake theories or by drawing attention to themselves so the murderer can avoid suspicion. But with that many criminals involved, there’s bound to be a witness, which is an investigator who knows which players are the murderer and accomplice, but not which is which. They also have to be extra careful with their knowledge. If the investigators solve the crime, the murderer and accomplice get a chance to guess the identity of the witness, winning the game if they get it right. The Forensic Scientist should then say, "Lab Technician, close your eyes", and verify that they have done so.

Players continuing discussing the clues until they’re again ready to end the round giving their 30 second thoughts. Investigator (8): The investigators win if at least one of them can correctly guess the means of murder and the evidence left behind. They can do this by using the clues given by the forensic scientist, but they must keep in mind the murder and the accomplice are within their ranks and will try to steer them in the wrong direction. At any point during the investigation phase, a player may attempt to solve the murder. This is done by cashing in your badge token and pointing out a player and a means of murder and an evidence clue. If these are the correct evidence the forensic scientist will say yes, and the game will be over. Finally, each Investigator should take a Badge token and put it in front of them. This tells everyone that they have not yet tried to solve the crime. Committing The Crime Having played it so many times in such a short period of time, you might think we’d be burned out. But we’re not!

Roles

Overall, though, it’s incredibly fun and probably one of the best social deduction games out there. Players of all experience levels can’t help but get drawn into the theorizing, and it’s incredibly easy to learn, making it a great option for a mixed group. thoughts on “Deception: Murder In Hong Kong ReviewWill You Be Deceived?” When an Investigator does that successfully, the crime is solved and the Forensic Scientist and the Investigators win the game. Accusations can be made during any time of the investigation by using the badge token. Look at Solving the Crime for more information. Investigation Speaking of time, there’s a lot of non-game time in Deception. Most of that is spent looking over all of the cards before the game actually begins. For the murderer to select cards that’ll provide a good challenge, they need to try to hide among similar cards. To allow for that, some time needs to be set aside for everyone to just…look. The box says the game plays up to 12 people, and if that’s the case you’re looking at nearly 100 tiny cards with frustratingly small text. Even with half the number of people and cards there’s a not-insignificant amount of silent staring at the beginning of the game where only one person really cares about the information gained. Then there are three entire rounds of discussion and guesswork without a whole lot of information gained before final guesses are due.
