Description

The character to set this story off is the creepy as hell Ice Cream Man; Hyde (yes, is this a 'hint' to Hide as in the title?) who delivers Ice cream to the celebratory 'Welcome Home Zee' party that is to be held for Zee after being home awhile now, and is to be 'reintroduced' to his best friends. The 6 kids wait and wait for the appearance of Zee, and while they wait they decide to play a game of hide and seek.....never knowing that this is what and how made Zee disappear in the first place!!! But this holiday things are different - the childhood games that once filled their days have lost their appeal to everyone except Millie. It's not until the final night that the others agree to a game of hide and seek. But in the time it takes Millie to count to twenty, Kat vanishes.

When Johanna and her family move into her new home, she's sure they've found her forever home. Until she learns about it's dark past: thirty years ago, it was home to three year old Lily Murph, who disappeared during a game of hide-and-seek, and never seen again. Joanna is determined to find out all she can about the little girls disappearance and the inhabitants of the close-knit neighbourhood are all eager to speculate. But the more she learns, the closer she's drawn towards her own dark family secrets - secrets she's spent years trying to hide. The hilarious illustrator of I Don't Want to Be a Frog brings picture book fans a super-silly, interactive story that will have children giggling from start to finish. Follow huge, loveable Fergus and see all the many ways in which he is TERRIBLE at playing hide-and-seek, such as standing behind a VERY tiny tree ("Found you, Fergus! That was too easy!") or trying to camouflage in a giant crowd of bunnies and squirrels ("Try bears, Fergus. Bears!"). The cover truly does the book justice: very scary, and perfect for your kid reader who is ready for something spookier. The game of hide and seek is over, everyone has gone home, but little Lily Murphy hasn't been found. Her parents search the woods and tell themselves that the worst hasn't happened - but deep down they know this peaceful Dublin suburb will never be the same again. Further, I promise this is it for complaints, the horror aspects were kept too obscure. I wanted more. I liked the build and tension initially.

A lot of thriller writers in recent years seem to be fans of the slow burn approach and often that can leave a reader underwhelmed. The opening section of Hide and Seek immediately grabs hold of you, slaps you in the face and leaves you cast aside agonising over what's to come. Daka Hermon sets the scene, the fears, the characters perfectly and spins an innocent game of hide and seek into something otherworldly and sinister. Haven’t we all played that terrifying game of hide and seek? Hidden somewhere sketchy and thought well I am not getting out of this or gotten lost while trying to find the others. If all the world is hell and evil is all around them, what else can they do but try to help each other? Shortly after Joanna, her husband and three children move into a new house in a mature, middle class estate in Dublin, Joanna discovers that the house was the former home of Lily Murphy. Lily disappeared when she was three years old during a neighbourhood game of Hide and Seek and was never found. Thanks to Kids Can Press and NetGalley for the provided e-ARC and the opportunity to read this book. My review is honest, unbiased, and voluntary. #NetGalley #HideAndSeek

I want to thank The publisher "Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine" and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC and any thoughts or opinions expressed are unbiased and mine alone! In all honesty, when I got to the end this is more of a supernatural horror book than the adventure I thought I was getting. The only clue is a little bold sentence at the end of the blurb, I should have paid closer attention.suuuuch slow pacingbut i will say this - the opening prologue is a perfect first chapter. absolute perfection. so its really too bad the rest of the book falls so short of it. Reading this book you are dropped into the tangled lives of the people in this community. You join Joanna on her hunt for the truth and see how rumours destroyed lives. Everyone claims to know their neighbours, but the truth is buried somewhere among the rumours and suspicion. You often wonder if the truth will ever surface. Daka Hermon's "Hide and Seeker" was supposedly a book for readers between the ages of 8 and 12....what the hell!!? No way would i ever give this to an 8 year old to read....nope. Daka writes of a game that we have all played and played over and over again growing up and she makes it out to be one of the most terrifying and scary games ever.....how you ask can the game be a terrifying race for your life? Did you ever think, "what if I cheat or break the rules?" These kids do exactly that and their lives will never be the same ever again! This is a gorgeous bedtime read-aloud about joy and family love and community, and most of all about feeling…
