To sum up, then, although The Genius X is undoubtedly an improvement on its predecessor, it’s actually an iterative update. Aside from the more refined, reliable brushing analysis, it’s exactly the same product. Users may be a little confused about how to fit the toothbrush into the case. It took us a littlewhile to work out that it won’t fit unless you insert the toothbrush in on its side. This is indicated with a very subtle diagram on the inside of the travel case, but it is easy to miss.

Oral-B’s Genius X review: Is the high-tech electric

Smart Series: The Smart series builds on the Pro series with Bluetooth connectivity and basic smart features. Some models are quite old now, but still effective. Users who want a quieter brushing session may find the Oral B Genius X to be a little too noisy for everyday use, while those wanting a simpler brushing experience may be put off by all the connected app whistles and bells. If this product isn’t for you Oral-B’s Genius X might look like any other premium electric toothbrush. However, inside its casing, there is a range of sensors that you’d more likely find in a smartwatch than a toothbrush – sensors that enable it to analyse your brushing patterns and tell you how to do a better job. The Oral B Genius X comes with some charge already, so it’s possible to use it straight out of the box. However, the manufacturers say it takes around 14 hours for a full charge. This is less than many electric toothbrushes, which take up to 18 hours. verifyErrors }}{{ message }}{{ /verifyErrors }}{{ Where the Oral-B Genius 9000 comes with four brush heads, it’s also worth pointing out that the Genius X comes with just one and there’s no phone holder or brush head holder. Otherwise, the main differences between the two models are purely internal. To be more specific, the newer model has gyroscopes and accelerometers to detect which areas of your mouth you’re brushing rather than relying on the video analysis of the Genius 9000. If you’re not bothered with the whole idea of apps and smart toothbrushes, then the iO Series 3 is amazing value and, arguably, the best brush in Oral-B’s whole range. It boasts the same magnetic drive technology as the other brushes in Oral-B’s flagship iO-Series range, but comes without the advanced sensors and Bluetooth connectivity to monitor your brushing and send the data to your smartphone. In practice, that means a quieter brush with a more comfortable vibration, and one that still leaves your incisors feeling polished and your molars super-clean, as well as doing a fantastic job of clearing plaque from between your teeth. Battery life isn’t up there with some Sonicare models – you’re looking at a recharge roughly every three weeks – but if you want the latest and greatest toothbrush tech for less, there’s no better buy. It’s also easy to clean the Oral B Genius X. Simply rinse the brush head under running water after brushing with the toothbrush still on, then switch off and remove the brush head. Clean the brush head and handle separately before drying. Always unplug the charging stand before wiping it with a damp cloth.

Oral-B Genius X review | TechRadar

The pressure sensor at the top of the toothbrush handle flashes red when too much pressure is applied. It also flashes to alert users to change position after 30 seconds and to let users know when the recommended 2 minutes of brushing time have elapsed. Alongside flashing, the toothbrush also emits a stuttering sound to prompt position change and to signal the end of brushing time.We test a number of aspects during our at-home testing, including decibel level of the toothbrush itself, its various settings and modes, and how long it takes to charge and run down. We also test whether the toothbrush could handle being submerged completely in water. The Genius 8000 launched as a cut-down, value version of the original Genius 9000 brush, and it still feels like a high-end toothbrush despite its price. It also gives an excellent clean, with a choice of six brush modes and three brush heads – CrossAction, 3D White and Sensitive – to cover a wide range of dental needs. Its Lithium-Ion battery still needs charging overnight but will last for over an hour of brushing from there on in, which should cover you for a couple of weeks. white: polishing mode for occasional or everyday use at a different frequency from daily cleaning or pro cleaning mode.

I’ll come on to how that affects the user experience in more detail below, but aside from this, there is really no discernible difference between the design and features of the two toothbrushes. They both have six brushing modes – Daily Clean, Pro-Clean, Sensitive, Massage, Whitening and Tongue Cleaner – and they both alert you when you apply too much pressure, simultaneously reducing the brushing speed. Oral-B Genius X review: Oral-B app and performance What’s more, it delivers an excellent clean, with three modes – Sensitive, Daily Clean and Whitening – that take you all the way from a softer brush that’s easy on the gums to a more intense polish that should help get rid of staining. Battery life, meanwhile, is exceptional; you’ll easily get through two weeks of brushing and probably three without a recharge. It’s the king of sensibly priced brushes and one of the easiest recommendations in the Oral-B range. Otherwise, it has the same tech and the same key strengths as the iO Series 6 and iO Series 9, giving you a smoother brush with less vibration than the older Genius models, yet still delivering an excellent ‘fresh from the dentists’ clean. You also get the same pressure sensor and timer, the same two weeks plus battery life, and the same OLED display and app-connected features. Given that the differences between this brush and the Series 9 are minor, the Series 8 makes a pretty strong case for itself as the best Oral-B brush to buy. Unlike other toothbrushes, the Oral B Genius X doesn’t power off automatically after two minutes of brushing. For younger, more easily distracted brushers, this could mean that they end up brushing for longer periods, which can damage tooth enamel. The other main problem is that despite having sensors on-board, the Genius X’s brains are still in your smartphone. That is to say, the toothbrush still needs to be paired with your phone each time you want to assess your brushing style. Oral B claims the Genius X can operate for more than two weeks between charges. Experts recommend brushing twice a day for 2 minutes per session, adding up to 56 minutes in total brushing time across 2 weeks. However, by day 9 of use in our at-home testing, the toothbrush was already flashing red to indicate the battery needed charging, so users are likely to want to charge more often than once every two weeks. As with the Genius 9000, it then takes you through a daily care routine, letting you log whether your gums are bleeding and whether you have brushed your tongue. Oral-B is the biggest brand for electric toothbrushes in the UK, but that doesn’t make it any easier to decide on a specific brush to buy. The manufacturer has several different ranges serving different customers and price points, and you’ll often find its older models being sold in chemists or supermarkets alongside its newest lines. To make things harder, prices fluctuate like crazy, so you’ll find brushes at half price at certain times of year, or new, mid-range brushes selling for less than budget brushes if you happen to catch them in a sale.

Pro Series: Oral-B’s affordable, mainstream brushes. These bring in the 3D action, with micro vibrations, oscillation and rotation for a better clean, along with pressure alerts and a lithium-ion battery (on most models). The operation mode is also customizable via the Oral B app, allowing users to select their favorite color from one of 11 options. If the Oral B Genius X sounds too noisy or high-tech for you, why not try the sonic Foreo ISSA 3 electric toothbrush? Beautifully designed, with a simple control panel and a quiet purr during operation, you’ll only want your phone in the bathroom to take a shelfie.
