About this deal

It’s important to consider what the length of the cable is. Ideally the longer length you can get the better because if you’re going to a new caravan park, then you might be unaware of the layout of the pitches or how far the electrical supply point is to your caravan. Products are often marketed by terms such as “water-resistant” which can be vague and doesn’t make it clear about how much water a product can be subjected to before it gets dangerous. An IP rating is a solution.

Some of these lower quality leads are made in people’s homes so they haven’t been produced at a commercial level which could mean that they haven’t been properly safety tested. They may look good on the outside, but there’s no way of telling if they’ve been wired correctly on the inside. Warranty An IP rating is short for the term Ingress Protection mark which is a two-digit grading system that’s ingrained onto the enclosure of electrical items so customers can see how effective the item is at resisting intrusion to unwanted substances. Using them with your caravan is very much the same as using electricity at home. The main difference is that because you are using a mobile unit, there is a higher risk of mistakes being made. Regularly perform your own safety inspections and arrange for a fully qualified technician to run safety tests periodically. It’s great to be at one with nature when you go camping, forgetting about work or what’s on the television that night and enjoying the peace and quiet of the countryside or making your own entertainment. However, it’s always important to have access to some kind of power supply to help get your camping essentials going – such as airbed pumps and an electric hook up for the electrics inside your caravan. Also supplied with the cable is a free cable reel which has an easy carry handle. This reel makes it easier to store away your cable when it’s not in use, with a robust design that’s built to last. The cable is constructed by in-house qualified electrical engineers so you can trust its quality. The cable ends have been terminated which reinforces the cable to lengthen the life of the extension lead. This stops the cable from loosening, so you get more use out of it.

The material of the hookup cable is important because throughout all its use it’ll be outdoors so it needs to be able to withstand the natural UK elements which can often include spells of wind and rain. The best cables will be covered in a PVC sheath that gives it all-round protection. Your supply cable will need to conform to standard BS EN 60309-2. This specifies a PVC/PVC flexible cable with three cores, each core ideally being 2.5mm. Hook up cables are therefore fatter than your standard domestic power cords. Cable care and storageMost campervans and motorhomes have a 12V leisure battery onboard which will offer enough power to run a small fridge, mobile phones and LED lights for a couple of days. This secondary power unit is only brought along on our trip if we have the drive-away awning with us. Store all cables carefully, on a reel or coiled in unkinked loops. Ideally, keep your extension cable in a cable bag. Do not keep your cables wrapped in polythene. It is likely condensation will appear which should be avoided.

Although, as we noted earlier, EHU cables come in a variety of lengths, we recommend you should invest in a one of 25 metres so that you have enough to stretch to the bollard, even if your pitch is further away than you expected. For UK-wired vehicles, this can cause a safety issue. Power is travelling down the neutral wire rather than the live wire. This means that an appliance will work, but live power will continue to flow to it even when it is switched off. This means that from a safety perspective that it can be seen by people walking past even if the grass is slightly long. Dark leads aren’t the end of the world, but it means that they’re harder to see and could be a trip hazard. Ease of Use It is also handy when staying at a friend or family member’s home and gives you a way of powering your internal lights, fridge, and phones without draining your leisure battery. You can also use other 230/240V electrical appliances. You can use the electrical supply to directly power 230V equipment, or if you need to convert it to 12V DC, you can have a power supply that converts it. Watts is used to measure electrical power and amps is used to measure electrical current. An electrical appliance uses a current that’s measured in watts. For instance, most, common hairdryers use a current of 6.5 amps or 1500 watts.
