As is quite usual with Martina Cole novels, we find out the ending, or near ending, in the prologue and the rest of the novel takes us from an early point, through a desparately hard life to the point where we meet the prologue again. Excessive repetition, do we need to be told twenty plus times that she is a drunken alcoholic who loves her husband (who hates her) and hates her sister (who loves her) – skimmed over sections as these had been covered numerous times before.Additionally, she has appeared on ITV's This Morning, The Crime Thriller Club, The Wright Stuff for Channel 5, ITV's popular daytime show Loose Women, The One Show and two episodes of Pointless Celebrities for BBC One, and a 2004 edition of The Culture Show. What would make a woman kill her husband by hitting over 150 times with a claw hammer? This and many other questions are answered as Sue Dalston recounts her East End upbringing whilst serving her sentence in prison, from waiting fearfully some nights to be abused by her father as a child; waiting for her crush as a 14 year old, on a 19 year old wannabe gangster to be reciprocated; waiting for the assaults from her husband to abate; to waiting for her many years prison sentence to end so that she can be with her children again!

The two gangsters are married to sisters. Freddie's wife is dependant upon drink and drugs and very jealous of her sister. While the world they live in has a strong moral code - loyalty - care for families - honesty in dealings with superiors (not the general public), retribution is swift and violent. Jealousy and betrayal erode the family bonds with severe consequences. Cole is one of the worst writers I've read in a while. The only style she has to speak of is a tendency to repeat herself and treat the reader like an idiot. Yes, Ms. Cole, I can remember what happened two chapters ago, thank you; there's no need to keep reminding me. She has no idea what characterisation or character development are. Her characters don't learn or grow; they're the same from start to finish. a b c Ross, Deborah (3 November 2011). "Martina Cole: 'I know I don't write literature' ". The Independent . Retrieved 5 November 2015.An explosive story of East End violence, the terrors of prison life and the pursuit of justice against all odds, with a heroine whose heartbreaking story will stay with you forever Two Women’ is my favourite so far of the books I’ve read by Martina Cole. It was heartbreaking at times and heart-lifting at others. The characters were so well developed you can’t help but love them, or hate them as the case may be. It's true that the novel is a little too long in places but with tgid spanning three decades and the inclusion of additional references from Thatcher's government to New Labour under Gordon Brown it really helps highlight the passage of time. The dialogue is excruciatingly unrealistic. The author doesn't use contractions, so the sentences sound completely false. This is the same as Lynda La Plante. I suspect that Martina may have used Prime Suspect as her template for writing and thought that that was how to write dialogue. Again, where was the editor?

Susan interrupted her acidly "One hundred and fifty two times with a claw hammer? Yes, I did, I counted the blows, it gave me something to focus on." Cole was born in Essex, England, to Irish Catholic parents, and was the youngest of five children. Her mother was a psychiatric nurse from Glasnevin, County Dublin and her father was a merchant seaman from Cork City. Her cousin is the Cork politician Denis Cregan. She was expelled from her convent school aged 15 after allegedly being caught reading a Harold Robbins novel. [1] [2] Martina Cole - Sky Arts: The Book Show". With the story taking place within a certain era there's some outdated misogynist language used throughout. This book needs serious trigger warnings. Huge amounts of child sexual assault and domestic violence. But I persevered. The book was gripping and it showed how good Martina Cole is at analysing human behaviour. Yes, she uses the criminal world as an example and as a metaphor, but shows how we are all guilty, to some extent, of justifying our hardships, finding excuses for our bad habits, frustrations, deflecting, assigning blame etc.
