Description

Katie writes about copying new words down in her journal, noting that words help, “describe what I’m experiencing” and “successfully name what I was going through” (My Notebook). Examine the section titled “It’s Mourning Time.” The title is a play on the word mourning, which sounds like morning. How does the word mourning help explain what Katie is going through in this section? Whilst on this journey to the New Beginning, the new, brighter future is snatched away in moments. A car accident leaves Ellie with just one parent - they are certainly going to start anew, but not as planned. D'Alessandro, Anthony (February 24, 2021). The In-Between by Hadley Vlahos | Waterstones

One day, Tessa lands in an old movie theatre to watch a film that is in French (one she does not speak). A good-looking (hot) guy about her age, Skylar, comes in and sits next to her, and translates for her. He is smart, funny, and intelligent. Ellie, along with her mom, dad, and her cat, were in a car accident in the Poconos. They were moving from a small town in Pennsylvania to a smaller town in New York, where dad was taking a new job, mom was studying for her real estate license, and where Ellie could get a fresh start. Fourteen-year-old Ellie was -- and is -- troubled. Best friend Priscilla wasn't the friend she thought she was, and she went through her life in a state of unease, disappointment, and ultimately, she attempted suicide as a means out. But the car accident puts everything into a different type of tail spin. Just as things felt like they could be a fresh start, they're not. Fourteen-year-old Elanor Moss has always been an outcast who fails at everything she tries―she's even got the fine, white scars to prove it. Moving was supposed to be a chance at a fresh start, a way to leave behind all the pain and ugliness of her old life. But, when a terrible car accident changes her life forever, her near-death experience opens a door to a world inhabited by Madeline Torus . . . Madeline is everything Elanor isn' beautiful, bold, brave. She is exactly what Elanor has always wanted in a best friend and more―their connection runs deeper than friendship. But Madeline is not like other girls, and Elanor has to keep her new friend a secret or risk being labeled "crazy." Soon, though, even Elanor starts to doubt her own sanity. Madeline is her entire life, and that life is drastically spinning out of control. Elanor knows what happens when your best friend becomes your worst enemy. But what happens when your worst enemy is yourself?

Compare and contrast Katie’s visits with her father and her life with her mother. Why does she say she feels like a guest when she visits her father? (Always Together) What does she learn about the reason that her father does not ask her to live with him all the time? Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die. I think the part that bothered me the most, besides the pseudo-intellectualism that both Tessa and Skylar constantly display, is the shaming of Tessa's friend Shannon.

The crux of this story is supposed to be that, in a very short timeframe, these two fell deeply in love and changed one another and then the boy died and blah blah... ugh, I'll stop saying this, but I could've just watched a rom-com and saved myself the time. There is a paranormal element to this in that Tessa knows Skylar is trying to reach her from the afterlife and tell her something. I loved this supernatural element to a contemporary story – I was curious to see the ways Skylar would (or could) communicate with the living world. Substance Abuse: At a party, the characters drink soju. One of the characters is shown drunk (not detailed). I've admired the risk and power of all his novels, but this might be the riskiest of all—so personal, so delicate and true—and I love it.' — Charlotte Wood on 7 1/2 Consider the section “Sometimes Things Fall Together” as it relates to the first section of the book: “Things Fall Apart.” If you could write a letter to Katie, how would you answer her question, “If things were always eventually going to get better / …why did God see fit for it to be this hard?”Why is Katie’s mother angry when her ex-husband sends Katie home with groceries? How does her reaction relate to the metaphor of an eagle that Katie uses to describe her mother? When tragedy strikes, Tessa wakes up alone in a hospital room with no memory of how she got there. And then she learns the horrifying news: Skylar is dead. The author writes impressively with topics of ADC, photography, medical, and writing from a teen's point of view.
