I like big things,’ she was still staring down at his erection, stroking it through the soiled cotton.”

Guy N. Smith - Wikipedia

Around this time I became Poland's best-selling author. Phantom Press published two GNS books each month, mostly with print runs of around 100,000. The last 4 categories all have to do with the writing itself starting with some descriptions I just found stupid. Not campy fun, just dumb. Now I admit that I am no expert on Crabs Of Unusual Size or C.O.U.S. (*nods to Princess Bride for the assist*), but the following descriptions of the mega critters just didn’t work for me: https://ksiazki.wp.pl/guy-n-smith-nie-zyje-polacy-kupowali-jego-ksiazki-kontenerami-6590065429175104aa Guy Newman Smith (21 November 1939 – 24 December 2020) was an English writer best known for his pulp fiction-style horror, though he also wrote non-fiction, softcore pornography, and children's literature. Are we the real monsters? No, we are not. The monsters are the Giant Crabs that we created by testing nuclear bombs underwater for no good reason. Our hero Cliff Davenport from ‘Night of the Crabs’ is soon on the scene, joining forces with a local fisherman by the name of Klin. The battle is on to protect the local population from these giant ruthless crabs as the crustaceans wage war on the community.

It features a botanist investigating the disappearance of his nephew and the latter’s girlfriend on the appropriately monikered Shell Island. The botanist finds weird markings on the beach that appear to be made by cow-sized crabs (while along the way he naturally takes time out to have sex on the very beach the crabs have marked!). The next book in the Crabs series is ‘ Killer Crabs ’ (1978) released just two years later. ‘Night Of The Crabs’ has set down the groundwork for this next outrageous pulp horror classic, where no time needs to be spent playing with the denial and disbelief of the military which takes up a good chunk of ‘Night Of The Crabs’. However from here on in it’s non-stop blood-drenched crab action. From the moment the crabs first take to the beach of Shell Island, expect nothing short of one onslaught after another. Ich finde die Grundidee von Riesenkrabben, die Wales angreifen sehr sympathisch aber bisweilen fande ich die Handlung und die Schreibe grauenhafter als die blutrünstigen Krebstiere.Obstructive Bureaucrat: The military on the island, and Colonel Goode in particular. Despite being personally assigned to assist Cliff in destroying the crabs by a knighted member of Whitehall, he doesn't believe the crabs exist and actually hampers the mission more than assists it. This book was written in the 70's so I had some issues with the views on women, but I understand this book is a product of its time, so that's cool. i am so grateful for michael for sending this to me, and i will read the other one soon, because it looks like it might answer some of the burning questions i have after reading this one.but, damn, there are a lot of books about crabs: Night Of The Crabs’ is the true beginning of the all-out crab war. It’s a classic pulp horror novel that is hard to be bettered for such an unashamed far-fetched enemy. An enjoyable read is most definitely the understatement of the century! You get the impression that Smith has thrown the sex in to keep the punters happy, rather than because his heart in really in it. If Herbert’s depiction of sex in books like ‘The Spear’ is bad, at least he tries to be sexy. Smith doesn’t even seem to bother. One memorable section in ‘Killer Crabs’ reads:

Immune to Bullets: The crabs. Their hard shells make them impervious to regular small arms fire. And pretty much everything else, too. With 100-plus books to my credit, I was looking for new challenges. In 1999 I formed my own publishing company and began to publish my own books. They did rather well and gave me a lot of satisfaction. We plan to publish one or two every year. Smith appreciated his fans and throughout his long career he produced a number of fanzines, many containing his short stories. They were originally produced as catalogues for his book selling business, but eventually changed into the fan club fanzine Graveyard Rendezvous, which ran for 41 editions. Smith and his wife even opened up their home and welcomed fans every September for an annual convention, an event that lasted over 25 years.

We have an crime novel with giant crabs on the edge. We have a duffel bag of 20,000 pounds driving the plot. We even get main characters who are NOT KILLED BY CRABS, something that will become vanishingly rare as the series goes on. There!” Cliff had spotted another movement amongst the waves. “Something’s…Oh, my God! Just look at that one!” Night of the Crabs' was the first instalment in Guy's signature `Crabs' series, but should preferably be read after the later released prequel entitled 'The Origin Of The Crabs'. `Origin’ ends exactly where `Night’ takes off, bringing together a seamless and tight storyline to the crabs series as a whole.
