With the Gravity Series® 560 Digital Charcoal Grill + Smoker by Masterbuilt®, you can smoke, grill, Thanks Yisroel! Without adding wood to the charcoal hopper, you will just get a real nice charcoal flavor. We used it several times without adding wood and really enjoyed the charcoal flavor that came through! Start the grill by placing a fire starter at the bottom of the charcoal hopper and lighting it. Brian Bennett/CNET The Gravity Series 560 doesn't operate like a traditional charcoal or kamado grill. It doesn't cook food in the same chamber as burning charcoal. Instead, an electric fan and vent channel heat and smoke from lit charcoal inside the hopper into the cooking cavity.

It also means that, unlike its simpler counterparts, you don’t need to empty the hopper after every cook and discard half-burnt coal. Instead, you can simply fire up where you left off the next time and not waste any fuel. Wi-Fi Connectivity: Stay connected to your grill from anywhere with the integrated Wi-Fi technology. Monitor and adjust temperatures, receive notifications, and access a library of mouthwatering recipes through the Masterbuilt app. The Masterbuilt 560 is reasonably economical when you are running low and slow. If you want to cook at higher temperatures, your fuel will go quite fast. That makes sense, of course, because the hopper is a large controlled fire starter. Blue tooth connection of the Masterbuilt smoker For example, if you set a temperature for the meat probe once it reaches that temperature, the alarm goes off as you would expect. When it comes to the seals on the cooking chamber, we find this model to be better than most. Like most smokers, we want the smoke to stay in the chamber as long as possible to get deeper smoke rings and infuse that smokey goodness into our meat.

If you do this, make sure there is not too much small grit at the bottom of the hopper. This obstructs the airflow, so the temperature will not rise fast enough, and you will get an E4 error message. If you do not see or hear this message, you will probably notice a lot of smoke. So, I fixed this issue by taking chromed metal rods about an ⅛” in diameter and placing them in the middle of each cutout. Most other gravity-feed charcoal smokers are not intended for higher “hot & fast” grilling temperatures, so they do not suffer from this firebox issue. We feel this is a double-edged sword with the Masterbuilt Gravity Series; we love the flexibility with regard to low & slow or hot & fast, but we feel Masterbuilt should have anticipated the negative perception their design would create with regard to the interior firebox deterioration, and we speculate this could have been avoided in more ways than one. Consumer perception, as was ours, is that this is a problem and that it is not normal. We will trust Masterbuilt’s claims in this regard and continue to use the device. Digital control panel Now, these areas will need to be oiled regularly to keep them from rusting. The paint shouldn’t be coming off this early. Or if this is normal, it should be noted in the manual to keep those areas oiled.

According to Masterbuilt, you should be able to smoke for 12 to 15 hours with a fully filled hopper of charcoal, but we have not yet made that happen. After about eight hours (sometimes nine), we have to fill it again. That’s fine, of course, but something to keep an eye on if you plan to run the smoker all night. So before you go to bed, you fill it up, and you’ll be fine. This Masterbuilt Gravity Feed charcoal smoker measures 52″ tall, 54″ wide, and 24 1/2″ deep. The unit weighs just a hair under 147lbs. Cooking Space:It can also accept right around 16lbs of briquettes depending on the size and brand. We’ve heard that users have gotten up to 15 hours of burn time for low and slow cooks using briquettes, but you can always add more charcoal during a cook as the need arises. The griddle is a game-changer, channeling heat directly upwards and beneath, enabling you to perfectly cook or smoke delicacies like steak and burgers. For those keen on enhancing this feature, I’d recommend the 560 Griddle Shroud. Here’s how to install it:

The issues I had was that basically whole briquettes and large chunks of lump would still fall through and often. Ok, now that we’ve covered the things that are the same, let’s take a look at each model and the differences between the two.
