Soon Laura finds blood stains in Ian's clothes that he wore on the night Phil was shot. She confronts him and he admits to seeing Phil lying unconscious after the shooting, but chose to leave Phil for dead over their animosity towards one another. Laura is angry that Ian lied to her, but she forgives him after Ian insists that he didn't shoot Phil; this later turns out to be true when the shooter is revealed to be Phil's ex-girlfriend, Lisa Shaw. During 2004, Ian gets acquainted with cafe worker Jane Collins. They soon embark on a passionate relationship that continues onwards going into 2006. He helps her to come to terms with the death of her husband, David Collins from Huntington's disease. Afterwards, she and Ian get engaged as they continue to fall in love with each other. But this is nearly ruined when Ian finds out that Jane had an affair with Phil's brother Grant Mitchell, but in the end he forgives Jane and the pair end up getting married in July 2007. He is the drama's longest-serving main character and one of four remaining original characters, the others being Kathy Beale ( Gilian Taylforth), Sharon Watts ( Letitia Dean) and Tracey ( Jane Slaughter). The character appeared in his 2,000th episode in the show on 26 March 2007, [1] and his 3,000th on 27 May 2016. [2] Woodyatt took an extended break from EastEnders on 22 January 2021. [3] [4] He made appearances on 12 December 2022 and 22 June 2023, prior to a full-time return on 22 August. The actor continued: "I just had another opportunity. This play came up. I just fancied doing something different. The way the storyline is, they needed me to take a break. Yeah.. the break’s just got longer."
