About this deal

This was the last distillery tour we went on in our 2 week honeymoon tour of Scotland, and it was by far the best. We arrived a little late but our guide John was welcoming and endlessly entertaining. Unlike other tours you get straight down to business and start with a tasting before you look around this beautiful distillery. It's quite literally a cottage industry, with whitewashed farm buildings with red painted doors. The smell if peat smoke wafting thru the air , makes this a memorable tour. Of course free samples at the end of tour & retail shop. Rotting wood. A very unpleasant chemical undercurrent. Bitter. With time, it grows even worse. Stomach acid. Edradour experimented with a heavily peated single malt, named ‘Discovery’, which went on to be called Ballechin. This is one of the most heavily peated malts produced outside Islay, with phenol levels of approximately 50ppm (parts per million), launching it in 2006. A new bottling of Ballechin has been and will be released every year, each time finished in casks made from different woods, once it has reached full maturity after ten years.

Edradour Single Malt Scotch Whisky : The Whisky Exchange

Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). Since its formation the company has built extensive warehousing at the distillery in which to store Signatory’s casks, as well as a bottling line and tasting room. Edradour is perhaps best known as one of Scotland’s smallest distilleries, producing a mere 90,000 litres per annum with a work force of just three. Established in 1825 in the hills of Pitlochry, Edradour (pronounced ‘EDD-ra-DOWer’) maintains its heritage as an almost artisanal distillery. The heart of the range, a ten-year old, exhibits an unconventional charm, uncharacteristic of a highland single malt. convey how I felt about those whiskies. However, these tasting notes only reflect my purely personal opinion.

In 1982 Edradour Whisky was acquired by Campbell Distilleries a subsidiary of the Pernod Ricard company before being sold on to Andrew Symington’s Signatory company in 2002, after Edradour was deemed surplus to requirements, when the parent company acquired Seagram’s extensive whisky operations. Nose: Smooth and round. Water melon and other light fruits. Peaches. Marzipan. Light and refreshing. Edradour was acquired in 1982 by drinks giant Pernod Ricard. Following the acquisition, three quarters of the distillery's yield was initially used in the production of blended whiskies, notably including ‘House of Lords’ and the auspiciously named ‘King’s Ransom’. It was not until Signatory acquired the distillery in 2002, that Edradour concentrated its efforts, almost solely, on producing single malts. Renowned for experimenting with various outlandish wood finishes, Edradour has released various malts matured in some rather interesting casks, a ‘Chardonnay Finish’, a ‘Côte de Provence’ and a curious ‘Tokaji Wood Finish’ being among the number.

Edradour | Scotch Whisky

A 1983 vintage Highland single malt from Edradour that was bottled 20 September 2004 after it was matured for 21 years, including a finish in a Port cask. A release of 730 bottles. Nose: Pleasant but not terribly expressive. There is fun to be had, but it stays very subtle. Fairly sweet. Barbaresco is a tremendously fun word to say. Go on, give it a go. Bellow it out loud like you're Matt Berry. Lovely stuff. Not from Islay? Might have made it to the 80's on the palate alone. Funny to see the batches improve. Toasted nuts, brown sugar, oatmeal-like grain, fruity custard and light bits of toffee, earth and char.Quite rich and very pleasant. Obviously a 'finished' whisky, but it works quite well. Nicely integrated. Each and every Member must be of legal drinking age in its country of residence to be allowed to use the Service. The ten year old Edradour is handmade and one of the last Single Malt Whiskies from a traditional farm distillery still in production today. The methods of production remain virtually unchanged in the last 150 years and are only just capable of commercial quantities. Indeed Edradour Distillery makes as much whisky in a year as most distilleries produce in a week. A rare pleasure for a fortunate few.

The accent moves further towards smoke and tar later on. The sweetness lingers in the finish for a long time. In 1982 the distillery, once again in a bad state, was sold to Pernod Ricard subsidiary Campbell Distillers who immediately opened it to visitors. It continued to play a low-key role in blends until 1986, when it first appeared as a single malt. Palate: Cloying, seductive murkiness. Rum, barley, toasted almonds. Some may find themselves lost in the mêlée, not quite enough method to the madness. The output of the two pot stills is only about 125,000 litres per year, about the amount that a typical Speyside distillery would produce in a week.

The tour is great , informative and fun. During the tour you get a full sized tasting glass (the one we got from Oban was much smaller) and you get to sample 2 different whiskies (or 1 whisky & a liqueur if you prefer). John was such a funny and warm guide we ended up getting his advice at the shop and bought a beautiful bottle of the cask strength 2006 single malt (this stuff is delicious).

Initially I was thinking of a score in the lower 60's, but after half an hour it becomes notably more complex. Taste: Smooth, fruity start. A solid, sweet centre. Plenty of tannins in the (slightly gritty) finish. Some smoke? I got this Edradour 10 Years as part of a sample swap with some folks and I gotta tell you… I like it more than I thought I might given everything I’ve read about it. There’s a lot more going on in here than I expected which we’ll get into right now in the Edradour 10 Years review below.
