Spread your wings a little further and discover the beautiful Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest for the chance to walk, explore and enjoy the fresh air (18 miles away), or visit the picture perfect castle and Observatory and Science Centre at Herstmonceux (15 miles away) The best remembered feature of William’s administration in England was the survey of resources known as the Domesday Book prepared in 1085 to 1086. In the 1930s, the town underwent some rejuvenation. Seaside resorts were starting to go out of fashion, Hastings perhaps more than most. The town council set about a huge rebuilding project, among which the promenade was rebuilt, and an Olympic-size bathing pool was erected. The latter, regarded in its day as one of the best open-air swimming and diving complexes in Europe, later became a holiday camp before closing in 1986. It was demolished, but the area is still known by locals as "The Old Bathing Pool". [20] Hastings Old Town July 1965. Until the development of tourism, fishing was Hastings' major industry. The fishing fleet, based at the Stade, remains Europe's largest beach-launched fishing fleet and has recently won accreditation for its sustainable methods. The fleet has been based on the same beach, below the cliffs at Hastings, for at least 400, possibly 600, years. Its longevity is attributed to the prolific fishing ground of Rye Bay nearby. [33] Hastings fishing vessels are registered at Rye, and thus bear the letters "RX" ( Rye, Susse X). Rail – The town is served by two railway stations, Hastings and Ore. There is one line from Charing Cross and London Bridge, via Tunbridge Wells; and another from Victoria, via Eastbourne.Harry H Corbett, an actor best known for his role as Harold Steptoe in the BBC sitcom Steptoe and Son, lived in Hastings up until his death in 1982. The 400,000 figure is given in Wace's Romance de Rou and the 1,200,000 figure coming from the Carmen de Hastingae Proelio. [68] Hastings Borough Council is now in the second tier of local government, below East Sussex County Council.

Gravett, Christopher (1992). Hastings 1066: The Fall of Saxon England. Campaign. Vol.13. Oxford, UK: Osprey. ISBN 1-84176-133-8. At his birth William grabbed the straw causing onlookers to comment on his determination. When his father, Duke Robert, left for the Crusades he appointed his little bastard son, William, as his successor. It was no secret that William intended to invade England. He had sent an insulting demand that Harold pay him homage and the gathering of the troops and ships had northern France in turmoil, causing Harold to assemble a powerful army along the Sussex coast in defence.

A historic British Rail Class 201 "Thumper" can sometimes be seen on historic runs to and from Hastings. [54] Of those 35, 5 are known to have died in the battle: Robert of Vitot, Engenulf of Laigle, Robert fitzErneis, Roger son of Turold, and Taillefer. [58] Almost all the traditional depictions of the battle present the fighting as occurring roughly on a north–south axis, with Harold’s army lined up to face directly south towards William’s forces. These reconstructions may have been coloured by the creation of parkland to the south of the abbey after 1066, leading to the assumption that the open sloping ground due south of the abbey preserved the land across which William’s army approached Harold’s. Landscape analysis undertaken in 2013, however, suggests that in 1066 this ground was bisected by streams and probably marshy, making it potentially difficult for William’s infantry to cross. The exact numbers present at the battle are unknown as even modern estimates vary considerably. The composition of the forces is clearer: the English army was composed almost entirely of infantry and had few archers, whereas only about half of the invading force was infantry, the rest split equally between cavalry and archers. Harold appears to have tried to surprise William, but scouts found his army and reported its arrival to William, who marched from Hastings to the battlefield to confront Harold. The battle lasted from about 9am to dusk. Early efforts of the invaders to break the English battle lines had little effect. Therefore, the Normans adopted the tactic of pretending to flee in panic and then turning on their pursuers. Harold's death, probably near the end of the battle, led to the retreat and defeat of most of his army. After further marching and some skirmishes, William was crowned as king on Christmas Day 1066. There are plans to expand the retail area in Hastings, which includes expanding Priory Meadow and creating more retail space as part of the Priory Quarter development. Priory was intended to have a second floor added to part of the retail area, which has not happened yet and so far only office space has been created as part of the Priory Quarter. In 1801, its population was a mere 3,175; by 1831, it had reached over ten thousand; by 1891, it was almost sixty thousand.
