About this deal

There are some other satinwoods that work well on MDF such as Dulux Diamond but I find that the Diamond doesn’t quite lay as flat on the surface as Aqua Guard. For uPVC window sills, there’s one product that outshines the rest, and that’s Selemix Pro. Let me elaborate. The finish of Johnstone’s Aqua Guard is amazing! So much better than even the old-fashioned oil-based alternatives. It doesn’t matter whether you apply it via brush, paint roller, or both. It settles so that roller and brush marks melt into each other. Any bare MDF will need a primer before painting as the MDF will simply drink your paint and leave a terrible finish if you go straight on with your topcoats.

Dries to a beautiful high-sheen finish that almost mimics oil-based gloss (but without the yellowing)Almost directly related to durability, you can paint MDF with any sheen paint after you’ve primed it. This is mostly down to personal preference although I would recommend skipping any ideas involving painting your kitchen cabinets with matt paint! Best Primer for MDF The Two Fussy Blokes is widely regarded as the best roller to apply water-based paint. Use the 5mm nap mini roller to paint any flat areas and you’ll get close to a spray finish. This is the perfect partnership for Aqua Guard. Available online. The alternative, Sandtex 365 Masonry Paint, although a decent choice for some applications, can be hard on the roller. If you prefer an easy application and cleaning process, especially on detailed window sill work, I’d lean toward the High Cover Smooth Masonry Paint.

Another interesting point about Pliolite is that despite being solvent-based, it’s VOC compliant, making it a safer choice for your health and the environment. When it comes to window sills, you can’t beat Sandtex High Cover Smooth Masonry Paint. The smooth, even finish it delivers is top-notch. Its staying power is exceptional, even in challenging locations like properties right by the sea, where salt, wind, and rain are daily affairs. While Emperor is often praised as the crème de la crème of masonry paints, it also comes with a hefty price tag. Sandtex offers an attractive alternative for window sill painting, being significantly more affordable and nearly as reliable. I’ve just wrapped up a project using Sandtex on window sills. The result was less splattering compared to Weathershield, and the application process was a dream. As a decorator with years of experience painting window sills, I can confidently vouch for Sandtex High Cover Smooth Masonry Paint.

So I am wondering about how well Floetrol would work with the Aqua Guard. As I say, the Johnstones already seems very different to the Dulux so I don't know if there might be some technical reasons why the Floetrol might not provide much benefit, or even be detrimental. Obviously I could do more experimenting but I was hoping to hear from someone who might have practical experience on a larger scale. I’ve tried other primers such as Zinsser 123 and Zinsser BIN but neither comes close to Haftprimer. After some bad experiences with water-based paints, I have moved over to them in recent years after discovering Floetrol. Using this, I have found I can get a decent finish with Dulux eggshell and satin (certainly much better than the expensive professional painter achieved in my hall/staircase/landing a few years ago). Compared to that, Selemix Pro holds its own beautifully. It’s significantly cheaper than Kolorbond, and the finish is superior. I apply it with a sprayer, and the finish is pretty much unbeatable. To achieve the perfect finish, the magic ingredient is 1-490 thinners. Just remember to thin the Selemix to a maximum of 25%; any more and the opacity suffers.
