When you see the word “ orange” in Japanese, you’ll likely see it written in katakana as orenji – a loanword (a word that was borrowed, that is) from English. But that doesn’t mean the concept of orange was brought to Japan by foreigners! Purple, on the other hand, was the color of nobility in ancient Japan. Purple dyes were complicated to use and expensive to buy, so only the wealthiest and more powerful people wore purple. And it goes even a step beyond – while today, of course, anyone can wear purple, for a time, common people were actually banned from wearing purple, even if they could get their hands on it. Pink in Japanese ( Pinku) As a result, please note this is only an experimental label that can be best used to possible identify problematic products you have used in the past. For the same reasons they are popularly used, they are also commonly avoided. Anecdotally, many individuals have reported that Silicones cause/excerbate breakouts, irritation, cause a feeling of skin being unable to breathe, cause clumping of cosmetic products and find it difficult to wash off. As a result, those who find them problematic are avoiding them and increasingly, cosmetic companies are avoiding them as well. The traditional Japanese name for it is momo or momoiro (桃色, ももいろ), but that’s less commonly used. Whatever you call it, pink is a cute, naive color in Japan, with connotations of love and romance. Kawaii! Brown ( Cha)The traditional colors of Japan trace their historical origins to the Twelve Level Cap and Rank System which was established in 603 by Prince Shōtoku and based on the five Chinese elements. In this system, rank and social hierarchy were displayed and determined by certain colors. Colors known as kinjiki ( 禁色, " forbidden colors") were strictly reserved for the robes of the highest ranking government officials; for example, the color ōtan (orange) was used as the color for the robes of kuge and use by any other lower rank was prohibited. Colors known as yurushiiro ( 許し色, "permissible colors") were permitted for use by the common people.

Marigolds and willows popping up in between balance out this Japanese spring palette. Acryl Gouache (also spelled as “Acrylic Gouache”) is pigment suspended in acrylic emulsion or basically matte acrylic paint. It has a large pigment load, much like traditional gouache. (Not all “acrylic gouaches” contain a high pigment load.) This is good for painting light colors over dark areas.

Picture the Japanese landscape – even a ball-park image will do. Think of the movies, anime episodes, or posters you’ve seen. These professional designed snapshots of life in Japan likely paid close attention to the colours and scenery we are talking about today, so they will work great. Today, however, they are distinct color categories in modern Japanese usage – with a few fun exceptions. For example, Japanese people still say aoshingou (青信号, あおしんごう), meaning “blue traffic light”, to talk about a green light.
