After the fight, we ended up having a shower at the same time. I just happened to look down and I said ‘Bloody hell!’ He had a willy down to there! I couldn’t believe it! I said ‘What’s that, Laing?’ He said ‘That’s me wood, man. That’s me wood.’ Kirkland Laing was a funny guy.” In 1909, Holland was convicted of sedition, having advocated violent revolution against capitalism during the miners' strike at Broken Hill. He was jailed for two years. He received little sympathy from the socialist movement, which considered his actions during the strike to be provocation and posturing. This embittered Holland considerably, and he suffered from serious depression. His depression combined with chronic overwork led to his health breaking down by 1911. I was terrified watching that film. Playing Spider-Man, you’re very much in the crosshairs, and there was an awful lot of hate when he was announced. The pressure was immense. But I saw it and thought: ‘Bloody hell, Tom, you’re Peter Parker.’” |Frank | Freddie Mercury | Freida | Genghis | Gilbert | Gloria | Gumbo | Heathcliff | Hercules | Jasper | Joey | Joey | Lady Di | Lionel | Lovebirds | Mandoo | Marge | Marge (II) | Marilyn | Musty | Neville

Another former world champion at the Hall of Fame was welter John H. Stracey – who was also celebrating his 69 th birthday. Heavyweight Aaron Oyebolla and light middleweight Marley Rutherford, from Hounslow's Westside Boxing gym, both won gold at the Mtk Lonsdale box cup. In 1918, Paddy Webb, a Labour MP, was jailed for refusing military service. Holland stood in the resulting Grey by-election to replace him. Holland was chosen based on his strong performance four months earlier in the Wellington North by-election and was a surprise to most given he was not from the West Coast, with many expecting Mark Fagan to be selected. [17] Holland accepted with the knowledge that he was to resign the seat when Webb was released. [18] Many Liberal Party supporters who had previously voted for Webb, thought Holland too extremist and withdrew their support leading to a reduced turnout. [19] He was narrowly elected and delighted with his victory, but other members of the party were less enthusiastic as Holland's majority was far lower than Webb's had been. Holland dismissed this, saying that his victory, unlike Webb's, had been for pure socialism rather than mere reform. Holland represented the Grey electorate 1918–19, and then the Buller electorate from 1919 until he died. [1] Holland was born at Ginninderra, now in the northern suburbs of Canberra. Initially, he worked on his parents' farm, but later was apprenticed as a compositor for the Queanbeyan Times in nearby Queanbeyan. Holland did not receive an extensive education, but developed an enthusiasm for reading. He also became highly religious, joining the Salvation Army. [1]

We’re talking because on June 19 Holland Snr is releasing an audiobook of his memoir Eclipsed, read by father and son. It’s a warm, wry account of seeing his own entertainment career effortlessly outstripped by his progeny – starting with the moment when, aged 10, Tom was talent spotted to play Billy Elliot in the 2005 musical adaptation. All shapes and sizes welcome, and No experience necessary, just the drive to learn and the willingness to represent us and share our vision. I had my first bout when I was 11 years old. I fought a boy called Paul Kettle from Kingston at Battersea Town Hall. I only went to watch, but I was carded by then and there was a boy called Steve Tennant and I borrowed his shorts and vest. Anyway, I won on points. By the time I got to 13 or 14, all of a sudden it just fell into place. I can’t remember how many amateur fights I had altogether, but I think I had about 40. I boxed in the Schoolboys and I was Middlesex Champion four years on the trot, from 1971 to 1975.” He added: "We are having a huge impact in the local area and are well known in the London boxing circles, but we are currently getting a lot of recognition in the UK for our successes."

Before Fame

Johns dad, Harry Holland, was inducted in the hall of fame for boxing in 2019, and has now cornered an amateur champion in every decade since the 1960s, after taking charge of Rutherford's corner in the final. After the match, John commended all his boxers, including brothers Tom and Paddy Cash, Bobby Maddox, Euan McCury, Mustafa Zadeh, Jake Wheeler and Kody Mellars.

Shortly before the 1919 election, the first contested by the Labour party as a united bloc, Holland contested for the leadership of the Labour party. Previous Labour leader Alfred Hindmarsh had died in the influenza epidemic in late 1918 leaving the position open. His only opponent was previous party president James McCombs, who had more parliamentary experience than Holland. The caucus voted and the result was a draw, though after a draw by lot, Holland won the parliamentary leadership of the party, becoming Labour's next leader. [22] Most historians see his victory as being due to his public profile rather than to his policies, which many in the Labour Party considered too extreme. In 1901, Holland stood as a candidate for the Australian Senate and the state seat of Sydney-Lang. He was standing for the Socialist Labor Party, having rejected the Labor Party as too moderate. [1] He did not make any significant impression. Later, in 1907, he stood in the New South Wales state election, but was caught up in strong infighting between socialist groups. Holland had acquired a reputation of arrogance and egotism, and was convinced beyond all doubt that his views were correct.Seddonville Library: Flood and earthquake loss reinstated. Holland came to personally personify the Labour Party in a way that his predecessors did not due to his superb oratory on public platforms where he could draw large crowds. He built up a core following among his caucus consisting of Michael Joseph Savage, Peter Fraser, Bob Semple and later Walter Nash. All were to become not only loyal lieutenants to Holland during his tenure, but the most influential members of the First Labour Government following Holland's death. [23]
