But this is far from the truth. In reality, there are more than a few bourbons with prices that are well above average. These bourbons have been proven to maintain their quality for eons. In 2010, Brown-Forman introduced Early Times 354 in the U.S., which meets the regulated criteria for straight whiskey. [ citation needed] Marketing activity [ edit ]

Nose: The nose starts off soft and inviting , with fresh floral notes then leading to candy corn and wood oil. As the nose unfolds, the nose gets darker and richer, with more oak, caramel, red apple, peanut shells, and a slight sawdust quality. Right before the sip comes a wave of buttered popcorn. Overall, the nose impressed me more than I was expecting. But technically, Smooth Ambler Contradiction is a blend of bourbons from West Virginia and the liquid obtained from the MGP Distillery in Indiana. A modern ET review is coming tomorrow and like this one, the one tomorrow will be distilled by Brown-Forman. Both bottles pre-date the acquisition of the brand by Sazerac (Buffalo Trace). Especially this one since the acquisition was in 2020. There’s an old saying that all bourbon is whisky but not all whisky is bourbon. That saying holds true today but in the case of Early Times there is a version that is a whisky and a version that is a bourbon, a Bottled-in-Bond version in fact. Got it?Palate – This can hit a little rough to a new bourbon drinker, due to it being 100 proof. But don’t let that scare you away from trying this bourbon by no means. It has fantastic taste qualities beyond the good burn it displays at the first sip. After you get past that sip you could be drawn to the nice soft caramel taste along with maybe even a hint of cinnamon. Maker’s Mark was also the most sought-after bourbon at a period when the American whiskey industry endured the doldrums of the ‘70s and ‘80s. At the time, many had turned to drink vodka and other related spirits. But the smooth and sweet flavor profile of Maker’s Mark brought them around. This was so complex, with a 20-second finish and layered in vanilla that it was easily the winner. It now goes on to compete for Best American Whiskey. The “bad” could also be called the “unknown”, except there isn’t a Clint Eastwood movie called “The Good, the Unknown and the Ugly”. Sazerac has developed a reputation of introducing changes to its brands that aren’t exactly customer-friendly. In recent years, price hikes and increased allocation measures have been common in most any Sazerac brand worth drinking. Will the Early Times bottled-in-bond suffer the same fate? The “used barrel” part is instantly obvious in the glass, as Early Times has a thin, semi-translucent amber appearance that is just a shadow of what bourbon aged three years-plus in new oak would have. With an appearance like that, the nose came as a surprise: fragrantly corn sweet with a nice current of vanilla with a touch of rye spice.

But then, there was a time when bottom shelf bourbons held the forte while seemingly premium bottles sat on shelves for months. The level of char goes a long way in determining the type of flavors it portrays at the end of the aging process. Most premium bourbons exhibit varying notes and aromas of caramel, oak or vanilla. Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. Sazerac released a statement saying, “A magnitude of enthusiasm stems from the Early Times Bottled-in-Bond expression, in particular as a connector to the brand’s early pre-Prohibition era offering. With sweet notes of caramel corn and traces of cinnamon spice, the Early Times Bottled-in-Bond expression has rapidly become a fan favorite. Though Early Times will have a new home, Barton 1792 Distillery will continue to deliver the same great tasting Early Times Bottled-in-Bond product that consumers have grown to love using the original recipe and mash bill.”Early Times Bottled in Bond succeeds at what it sets out to do - appeal to many at a fantastic price point. The brand brings with it a long and storied history, an added bonus for anyone who thinks beyond the glass. However, while the flavor profile and overall drinking experience is enjoyable, it is really the combination of a great price and approachable flavor profile that make this worthwhile. Given the fact that we’ve seen great value bourbons become overhyped and subsequently overpriced - due to either the producer increasing MSRP or retailers’ perception of high demand - it is important to note that Early Times Bottled in Bond will ultimately lose its magic should that occur. Put simply, Early Times Bottled in Bond is absolutely worth seeking out and having as a regular on your shelf, just not if you have to overpay for it. Old Grand-Dad Bonded Bourbon is a good bourbon that offers a lot of value. It may be categorized as a bottom shelf spirit, but the same cannot be said about its taste. The liquor is made from the same mash bill used in producing the more high-priced Basil Hayden’s bourbon.

And the Price Point won’t Break the Bank either The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh. A+: A masterpiece and one of the ten best whiskeys of its type. Above five stars. The bottom line is that Early Times isn’t great, but it certainly isn’t the rotgut it is sometimes made out to be. The stuff is actually a decent product, is simple enough that ice doesn’t ruin it, and is a big winner when you consider it’s low, low price point (see below). You need to learn everything about bourbon and drink some of the classics viz. the best bottom shelf bourbons. It is a highly essential step for beginners. You will discover their iconic and pleasing flavors. And you will also learn both the cultural and historical significance of each display. Created by blending Straight Bourbon (new charred oak) and “whiskey distilled from a bourbon mash” (used cooperage), this is a unique whiskey. Yeah, double casks are everywhere these days, but this is a true blending of new and used cooperage distillate which puts it in a realm of its own.
