Ursula has appeared in various Disney Press novels and tie-ins for the franchise. A comic book series, Disney's The Little Mermaid, was released in 1992, revolving around the adventures of Ariel living under the sea as a mermaid. Ursula appears in a few issues, notably "Serpent Teen", which depicts how Ursula obtained the sea serpent carcass that makes her home. [79] My Side of the Story: Ursula (2004) retells the plot of the film from Ursula's point of view, and depicts Ursula having romantic feelings for Triton. After trodding through the first two books of the desert that is the Shades of Magic series, this was like coming upon an oasis for my queer, Indigenous self. And yeah, I'm gonna directly compare Schwab's Lila to Tokuda-Hall's Flora/Florian, so strap in for some education on queer rep from your friendly neighborhood PoC drag king. There’s a lot to love about the characters in The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea, especially because the character work goes so deep for many of them.

The only flaw I found in this book was that the pacing was slightly odd at certain times. I think the brutality and cruelty in certain parts could also put some people off, but I personally believe that glazing over that would have taken away from the impact of the story. But whatever the reason, I didn’t fall in love with book quite enough to merit a five star rating. They runes were drawn on shells and placed at the shore, allowing the tide to carry their intentions into the water during high tide. A strikingly original and accomplished debut, The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea reads like an undiscovered classic with impressively modern flair. Firstly, I loved the fictional world of this book. Tokuda-Hall put so much detail and work into developing it, and the end result paid off. Everything from the history to the places felt real. Plus, there was so much that made it unique. I’ve mentioned before that I also love mermaids, and that was definitely one of my favorite things about this book.
