It manufactures televisions at a large scale and has passed on a lot of those savings to consumers in a bid to win over a worldwide audience. If you’re looking for a cheap television that offers a lot for the price, TCL will often be a good bet – often for very large-sized televisions too.
Again, brightness alone doesn’t guarantee picture quality. In conjunction, though, with the C845K’s high dimming zone count and the fact that it uses Quantum Dots to deliver high-volume colours capable of capitalising on all that claimed brightness (TCL claims coverage of 97 per cent of the digital cinema DCI-P3 spectrum), we can’t help but at least hope that the 65C845K is going to do something pretty groundbreaking for its price point. Other TCL sets, like the DP648 in the UK, use a much more basic Linux OS. Most new TCL TVs, though, come with the same Android OS – in an attempt to standardise across the board – which is a good all-rounder smart platform also used by Sony and Hisense. The TCL 65P639K comes with a remote control that is easy to use and responsive. It features a minimalist design with dedicated buttons for popular streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. Additionally, it also has a voice control feature that allows you to use your voice to search for content or control the TV.The TCL 65P639K is compatible with VESA wall mounts with a 400mm x 200mm mounting pattern. As for cloud-based gaming, Google’s subscription-based Stadia service bit the dust in early 2023 after a three-year run, so there currently isn’t a gaming option with native support in the Google TV ecosystem. You can find the Nvidia Geforce Now app in the Google Play store, however, which presents a solid alternative. The QM8’s native 120Hz panel and support for 4K 120Hz input on two of its HDMI ports (up to 144Hz on HDMI input 1) makes it a solid option for gaming. FreeSync Premium Pro is also supported and a Game Accelerator feature allows for up to 240Hz VRR gaming at 1080p resolution. The C845K’s so-called Game Master Pro 2.0 system provides VRR support too, in the AMD FreeSync and ‘basic’ HDMI flavours, as well as ALLM switching so the TV will always turn to its fast-response Game mode when a game source is detected. This fact does bring us quite early on to the C845K’s biggest picture weakness, though. Namely, a slightly cloudy look that can sometimes appear with shots and scenes that contain a bold mixture of very bright and very dark content, as the local light controls wrestle with achieving the best balance of local contrast and HDR brightness.
The TCL 65P639K comes with a 2-year warranty that covers any manufacturing defects. This is a standard warranty period for most TVs in this price range. However, it’s worth noting that some other brands offer longer warranties for their TVs, so if the warranty is an important consideration for you, it’s worth comparing the warranties provided by different brands. VS Other Brands It looks accurate from almost all angles. Colors desaturate slightly when viewed from the far sides, but it’s minor and the sweet spot is otherwise wide enough. The C3 retains the elegant design of the C2 but adds a new processor for even better visuals and more advanced audio upmixing. Upscaling of HD sources is a touch disappointing given the promises of ‘Deep Learning’ intervention, leaving things looking a little soft and undetailed versus the sort of results we are now accustomed to getting from the likes of Samsung, LG and Sony. The C845K’s upscaling at least doesn’t look noisy or ‘rough’, though, so we would say it remains good enough for such an affordable TV capable of such heroics with native 4K. The TCL 65P639K has a wide viewing angle, meaning you can enjoy the same picture quality no matter where you’re sitting in the room. This is especially useful if you have a large family or like to entertain guests frequently. It also has a 60Hz panel but the resolution is FHD (1,920 x 1,080) rather than UHD (3,840 x 2,160). While flagship sets with discrete speaker systems will sound even better, for a step-down model the A80L sounds very impressive. This should be a strong consideration for anyone with this sort of budget who is determined not to combine their new TV with a dedicated sound system. The TCL 65P639K offers decent sound quality thanks to built-in speakers. However, if you’re looking for a more immersive audio experience, consider investing in a soundbar or other external audio system.
