Target-rich army: All your units are good, but that makes them all valuable targets. Since they mostly trend towards the lower end of the mobility spectrum (at least once they’re on the board), opponents with high powered mobile units like Aeldari and some Chaos lists can strike surgically and do a lot of damage. This box doesn't include the full rulebook, dice and range rulers that Dark Imperium does, so if you're looking for a starter box, you should consider that. Shadowspear does have enough for 2 players to get going with Warhammer 40K with miniatures for the two forces, the basic rules, campaign details and rules for all the miniatures in the box. All you need to add is some dice and a tape measure.

Tech-priest Dominuses have fallen out of favor recently, which is a shame because Ad Mech still field Vanguard and Rangers on a regular basis to fill out Battalions and the Dunecrawler is a legitimately good unit that sees lots of competitive play. It’s still a great boxed set to start building off of, but some of the savings are mitigated by the fact that you probably won’t want a Tech-Priest Dominus in your army. Shadowspear includes a campaign booklet that details the ongoing story and details of the Nemendghast campaign of which Shadowspear is part of. The booklet includes a mini-campaign of 6 linked missions that can be played with your own forces, or the Historical Forces using the two armies in the box. The Campaign booklet also includes an Open Play mission and some narrative hooks for other missions. Start Collecting

Some have said he is useless but I think in a thematic list with lots of veterans he can be a really fun choice if you want to keep it fluffy. If you later got a couple of terminator units to deep strike during a game he can go with them and help them out with those rerolls and also make better use of that TDA suit as he'll likely be off somewhere away from the bulk of your force so it makes him more survivable. They have 5 wounds, making them difficult to kill and are armed with Demonic Mutations, that have Strength 5 and do D3 wounds with -2 AP. They also boost nearby Daemon units' strength when they are close by. Marines also have access to a Psychic Awakening book, Faith And Fury, which adds some nice rules for spending command points characters like librarians, chaplains, ancients. You can ignore this if you like but it can be nice to have, especially if you start looking at the options it provides high level narrative/tourney play.

There’s also a good stepping stone towards this on the way to 1500pts – if you take out the second copy of Start Collecting Vanguard and the Phobos librarian, you’re left with just over 1000pts and can get under it while keeping a Battalion by shuffling the model counts on the Infantry. You may also find a slightly older Combat Patrol Space Marines box, containing Vanguard Space Marines, in your friendly local game store.This doesn’t have rules for Combat Patrol in 10th edition, but it’s a greatstart to an army. Savings-wise this is decent, but the contents are rubbish. You don’t ever really want Tactical Marines and Baal Predators don’t offer much either. This really suffers from including the Predator – it would be a much better box if it had say, Death Company instead. Feels like a relic of 3rd/4th edition. So, this box contains a lot of different models, all in shades of unpainted, unprimed gray (that Ultramarine Blue won't come in handy till they've been primed, after all!).
