About this deal

Max Brown says: "I haven’t played a comedic role before, so that was a massive attraction. Also, I haven’t read many scripts like this where I’ve laughed out loud. There are lots of detective series, but not many are as quirky as this!" Britain is in the grips of the ‘Big Freeze’ – the worst winter on record. Sister Boniface and her fellow travelers are stranded in a train after a frozen coupling snaps, leaving the last carriages stranded in snow. When The Star of the Orient, a precious jewel, is stolen from its safe and a passenger is discovered murdered, Sister Boniface must use her exceptional detection skills to decide who among the suspects is responsible. But with little signs of rescue and a failing generator, passengers must also contend with a more pressing issue – freezing to death. Elsewhere in the series, a famous organist is murdered mid-tune in the chapel, Great Slaughter’s first sci-fi convention results in a mysterious kidnapping, and a ‘dead cert’ at the screen tests for the new ‘Agent Best’ ends up, well… dead. To top it all, Felix has a challenge of his own when his fiancée Victoria arrives from Bermuda with an ultimatum that could change everything… Executive producer Will Trotter commented: “We are absolutely thrilled to see Sister Boniface return for a second series. Jude Tindall and the team of writers have created unforgettable characters full of wit and mischief. Great Slaughter plays host to the summer roadshow of kids’ TV show ‘Jolly Roger’, much to the annoyance of editor Dinah Morgan (Abigail Thaw). Taking her frustrations out on the cast and crew, Dinah insists on a newer, thrill-seeking version of Jolly Roger to spice things up in sleepy Great Slaughter. Timbers are soon shivered however when Dinah is discovered smothered onset during a live show. Sister Boniface (Lorna Watson) is called in to investigate who could have committed the deed - action man Jono Hardy (Alan Emrys), cheeky chappie Danny Lemon (Mikey Collins), acrobatic Sandy Shanks (Alice Marshall) or ousted producer Fliss Forsyth (Rhiannon Clements). Sister Boniface must parley with a parrot and probe a puppet to get to the bottom of the mystery before sabotage derails Jolly Roger’s most ambitious stunt yet.

Set in 1960s rural England, this entertaining detective drama follows the investigations of Sister Boniface of St Vincent’s Convent – nun, moped rider, wine maker and part-time forensic scientist. Season 2 premiered earlier this year, becoming the highest rated show of 2023 so far on UKTV’s Drama channel with 1.3m viewers.

Sister Boniface Mysteries: Christmas Special

Slightly removed from the Father Brown timeline, the spin-off is set in the 1960s. It's a time when police forensics were still very primitive, and even simple blood tests could take days for results. “DNA” didn't exist as a term, and there was little awareness of trace evidence. A copycat poisoning of Irene Symonds brings into doubt evidence against Myrtle Hunnisweet, aka The Good Samaritan, gathered by Sister Boniface and Max. Instead of prison Hunnisweet, a fan of Agatha Christie, was declared insane and sent to a psychiatric hospital. Another poisoning, of Saul Cropper, leads to Sam's suspension. Suspects include Symonds's husband who knew of his wife's many extra marital affairs, psychiatric nurse Brenda Bristow needing money and sole beneficiary of her grandfather Saul Cropper. A third suspect is author Oswald Blower writing a book to prove Hunnisweet's innocence. Sister Boniface is convinced Hunnisweet is communicating by code with the copycat killer. A painting and hospital magazine in Hunnisweet's room provide a clue and forewarning to Sister Boniface of an attempt to poison Sam and then probably herself. Filming has started today on the third series of the hugely popular BBC Studios Continuing Drama production, Sister Boniface Mysteries. Series three is a co-production for Britbox International and UKTV’s Drama channel and will include a feature length Christmas special written by series creator Jude Tindall and directed by Ian Barber. Miranda Raison joins the cast as Ruth Penny, a hard-nosed investigative journalist and editor of the Albion Bugle. Ami Metcalf will play the role of Peggy Button, the young, unshakeable police constable.” Sister Boniface Mysteries is a BBC Studios Continuing Drama Co-Production for BritBox International and UKTV’s Drama channel and streaming service, UKTV Play. BritBox will also premiere the series in South Africa, Australia, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland. The Series Producer is Mat McHale and the Executive Producer is Neil Irvine for BBC Studios. The Executive Producers from BritBox International are Reemah Sakaan and Stephen Nye. It is distributed globally by BBC Studios Distribution.

We’re not yet sure if Father Brown himself, actor Mark Williams, will make a guest appearance again. The entire cast and crew have been a joy to work with and I think that shines through in this big hearted and hugely original show.” And then there's Sister Boniface. Hidden away in St. Vincent's Convent with a bunch of winemaking nuns, she has a genius-level IQ and a PhD in forensic science. Instead of the usual cozy detective who meddles and blunders about, she has an actual role as the official Police Scientific Advisor, working with DI Sam Gillespie and DS Felix Livingstone – and advise she does, finding mud, blood, hairs, stains, and fibres at the crime scenes. Her laboratory is far superior to anything the police have at HQ. The Hidden radio station used in Season 2 Episode 8 "Dead air" was filmed at Donnington Brewery. Donnington Brewery is also home to Mrs Devines House from Father Brown Episodes [ edit ] Series 1 (2022) [ edit ] No. The incredibly fancy (and, truth be told, a little more expensive) Steelbook format is the only choice for those needing a physical media release that doubles as a table tennis bat in a pinch.
