There are some companies that refuse to give us their full animal testing policies or remain vague about some aspects. I couldn’t trust these brands as being fully cruelty-free, so here they are, along with the explanation. 1. Dazzle Dry Colourpop just launched their new nail polish line, and they are SO pretty! They're the perfect addition to their amazing aesthetic. In addition, their polishes are "7-Free" and vegan. 5. Deco Miami Truth be told, I completely burnt myself out (understatement of the century) over the last couple years creating Smith & Cult . I loved every minute of it, but I have not made overall wellness, which I think is inner beauty, enough of a priority. I am working on nurturing my foundation by engaging in activities that are healthy, and forgoing those that have not served me. That means more volunteer work, exercise and spending more time with my dearest friends. Would highly recommend Orly to anyone looking for a mid-level-price polish. Their nail treatment stuff is particularly impressive, and I threw in the towel on Essie after ending up with too many shades that were a gloppy mess, but Orly polishes have been consistently well-formulated. If you’re in Canada, don’t overlook the “Quo by Orly” line…

Hard Candy is a super cool cult favorite with fun colors, and they've been around since the 90's. Some of their nail polish bottles still come with awesome collectible rings! Their products are currently available at Walmart and online. 7. JordanaIn the ’90s, we were all pretty much robots directed into Bath and Body Works by some supernatural force that pushed out the constant message that we had to smell like some combination of vanilla, gingerbread and brown sugar at all times. Milani Cosmetics makes a chic but affordable Color Statement Nail Lacquer, which is available at drugstores and online. Their shades do contain guanine, which can be an animal-derived ingredient. 12. Orly

No Miss Cosmetics is a growing beauty brand offering an eclectic supply of nail polishes and other products. Most of their polishes, including their One-Coat Polish, are "4-Free", although their Glitter Polish is not. 15. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics

Cruelty-Free Drugstore Brands

And of course, we cannot forget the multitude of amazing independent and indie brands, many of which are also 100% vegan! 1. A.Dorn Butter London is a popular polish brand available at Ulta and Nordstrom. They offer a fairly extensive shade selection and their formula is "8-Free", meaning it does not contain Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, DBP, Toluene, Camphor, Ethyl Tosylamide, Xylene, or TPHP. The formula is not vegan as it contains hydrolyzed silk. 3. Ciaté London

I totally remember running out to buy “Sky,” the baby blue Hard Candy nail polish that Alicia Silverstone helped make famous when promoting Clueless on David Letterman. Hypothetically, if Alicia were promoting “Clueless 2” in 2016, what must-have color from Smith & Cult could you see her wearing today? And in this corner you had genuine badasses who didn’t play around and went an even deeper shade of mocha with Revlon’s Toast of New York. Zoya is a fashionable cruelty-free brand whose products are available at Ulta, Walmart and online. Their nail polishes are "5-Free". I love using their nail polish remover in particular! 21. Jolie Vegan NCLA is a super popular option not only for polish but also for awesome nail wraps. All of their nail polishes are made in California, "7-Free" and 100% vegan! 14. No Miss RMS Beauty's nail polish line is inspired by their famous Living Luminizer (a facial care product), adding a healthy sheen to the nails. Their polishes are "6-Free" and vegan! 25. SOPHiLVX's nail lacquers are inspired by runway looks from top fashion designers. They even collaborate with designers for Fashion Week runway presentations. Their gel-like formula is really good for longer wear, and they're also "7-Free" and 100% vegan. 11. Manic Panic SOPHi, the brand that makes Piggy Paint, now also makes a more sophisticated polish for adults (by popular demand)! Like the children's version, these polishes are "more than 5-Free", odorless and vegan. 26. SpaRitual Habit is the only nail polish in the US that uses Myrrh, an extract that naturally strengthens nails! In addition, they're vegan and "7-Free". I love the sleek bamboo overcap, which is not only stylish but also environmentally friendly, reducing the amount of plastic used. 8. Julep All of your products have very witty names like Bitter Buddhist and One Word Chorus . I love the way your brain works. Do you have a particular name you’re especially proud of? When I was told I had the opportunity to interview Dineh Mohajer, my 90s obsessed glittery heart skipped a major beat. I don’t know about you but, as a teenager, CLUELESS was one of my favorite movies (and totally still is!) and huge inspiration for me style-wise (even if my teenage self couldn’t actually pull off a yellow plaid blazer with matching mini skirt at the time…WHATEVER). However, what I could confidently pull off was the baby blue nail polish that adorned Alicia Silverstone’s nails throughout the mid-90s , created by a very forward-thinking nail polish company called HARD CANDY, run by a college student named Dineh Mohajer.

Unlike your previous beauty ventures (including my ‘90s teenage dream brand, Hard Candy) Smith & Cult prides itself on using natural ingredients for its lip glosses and nail polishes. What inspired this shift? I think if Clueless 2 came out in 2016 I would be die of happiness. Beyond that, I could see Alicia/Cher donning a new shade of ours, called 1972 (the first rose gold foil) as well as a new matte top coat called Flatte that will transform any shade in your current collection. Now I can’t stop thinking about Clueless 2. Can that be a reality? As if. The name Smith & Cult embodies the clashing duality and its harmonious existence within each of us. People are never one-dimensional, but rather multi-layered and complex creatures. Smith represents the refined, elegant side of the spectrum, whereas Cult represents the more subversive and unruly side. I strive to weave this philosophy throughout every facet of the brand. The brand name came out of a late night brainstorming session I had in bed in PJ’s (my happy place).

3. Brands with No Response

Gabriel Cosmetics is a natural luxury cosmetics brand available in stores like Whole Foods as well as online. Their core collection includes a whopping 50 shades, and they're not all grey! The polishes are actually "10-Free", and all of Gabriel's products are 100% vegan! 7. Habit Can you think of another deodorant that inspired the biggest music hit of the decade? ‘Nuff said. Whether it actually worked is anyone’s guess — I can’t say I know a soul who used it.
