Ground preparation is certainly very important when constructing WoodBlocX. You obviously want to start level so you can finish level. Cedar is a popular choice of material thanks to its natural rot resistance and long lifespan. Cedar boards are stronger than other types of wood, and this is one of the more sustainable woods to source. It’s biodegradable so, provided it’s not treated, will eventually break down into the earth. WoodBlocX is suitable for sitting on any surface, including slopes - all you need is a suitable level surface. L-Shape Raised Garden Bed

The naturally golden colour of our raised garden beds will last for several years before fading to a silver-grey. WoodBlocX structures can be painted with any good-quality exterior wood paint. Growing vegetables in plastic containers can be safe as long as you are able to identify the plastic as safe for growing food. Some plastics can leach harmful toxins into the soil, especially if exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods of time, making them unsafe for growing vegetables.

We strongly recommend putting a liner and drainage medium in all of our structures, especially in raised beds where you are planning on using soil to grow with ( we now sell a liner). WoodBlocX raised beds do not have a base but you can add your own if you require (we recommend using a good-quality plywood).

Configurations

Raised bed planters are made from naturally durable cedarprotected by a non-toxic waterproof sealant that is safe for edible gardens. Raised beds can be built in custom shapes and sizes. Please let us know if you need help designing a garden.

Calculate the amount of soil you will need (cubic feet/yards) using the dimensions of your raised garden bed. Keep in mind that the number should include the soil mixed in with compost. Your soil mixture should be 60% topsoil, 30% compost, and 10% potting soil. As soil can be quite expensive, we suggest you try the Hugelkultur method if you want to save money. Once you have obtained the soil, fill it near the top. The exact amount is determined by the type of plants you will be growing and personal preference. Make sure to refrain from tilling the soil as this can dry it out. Cucumbers do very well in raised beds, but they do need a depth of around 18” to grow properly. Give them a spot in full sun and protect them from frost in the winter months. Growing them on stakes or a trellis like the image above will give you more space beneath.
