I have a degree in electrical and electronic engineering and a doctorate in high voltage electrical engineering. I have research experience in high voltage engineering, magnetics and studying lightning phenomena working with industrial project partners such as National Grid, Rolls Royce, Western Power Distribution, UK Power Networks and Scottish and Southern Electric. My work has engaged with social, health, and environmental challenges in South Asia. Through three major projects, I am exploring suicide, charity, and pesticides respectively. Funded by the ESRC, Wenner-Gren Foundation, WHO, and others, my work on suicide develops a practice theory of self-harm and opens new perspectives linking self-harm to questions of learning, agency, and power. Exploring how children and adults acquire suicidal ideas, I have argued that self-harm emerges from a confluence of material, social, emotional, and cognitive events (‘ontological subjectivities’) that make self-inflicted death possible (an ‘epistemological objectivity’). I understand suicide as a means through which 'the idea of death can be put into other people’s minds,' exposing forms and troubles of relationality. In future work I plan to follow the implications of this for the wider understanding of suicide and conduct a major cross-cultural study that explores the technologies, moralities, and ethics of chosen death across the globe. My Research activity is associated with the Advanced High Voltage Engineering Research Centre, Lightning laboratory and the Magnetics Materials and Applications Research Group. I have experience of large-scale laboratory developments, designing and conducting experimental pilot projects. I am interested in future materials that will help reduce carbon emissions and environmental impact to meet net zero targets and improve efficiency of the electrical power generation, transmission and distribution networks. Previously I was a member of the International Cigre Standards working group for alternative insulation gases for high voltage energy networks. Currently my research has generated over 20 journal publications, conference papers and research articles.I was the lead researcher for the CENTRIC study which developed a six-module online training course for researchers working with routine administrative data.
