Description

Wharfedale loudspeakers are so well regarded, above all, for their sonic excellence. Build quality is impeccable and design is focused - resulting in an overall product which is coherent and capable. Wharfedale are an industry leader and consistently produce award-winning and industry-renowned loudspeaker products.

The Diamond 10.1 are definitely worth their price, but they come with little or no discount. Now several member have bought Diamond 10 series speakers, and not a single one is complaining that he paid too much. They are all very satisifed with what they got for what they paid. Each satellite uses a two-way driver arrangement, comprising a3in mid/bass driver fashioned from woven propylene, and a 0.75in silk dome tweeter. The current Issue of Stereophile Magazine (though it may not be on-line yet) has a review of the Wharfedale Diamond 225 that is generally positive, and ends with the speakers being "Highly Recommended". They have also previously reviewed the Diamond 10.1, which got a rave review, and the Diamond 10.7 which also got a very good review. I believe S tereophile also review the Wharfedale JADE 7, and gave it a very positive review. The Wharfedale Diamond range is one which has been delighting audiophiles, music lovers and hi-fi enthusiasts in some form since the early 1980s, and these ranges have been a staple of the budget speaker market ever since. With nearly three decades of supremacy within the hi-fi market, winning numerous international awards and selling over 1 million pairs worldwide, Diamond has become the most recognizable name in hi-fi loudspeakers. This enable the relatively simple crossover to yield a phase perfect integration to the treble unit throughout the whle crossover region, creating a soundstage which is free from the speakers and allowing the drive units to work as a cohesive whole. What they give you is top-table performance but they basically sit on a different facet on the same diamond (no pun intended), giving you something different and unique in terms of sonic style and choice. And I love the fact that choice is out there, ready to be selected.

The centre speaker tops off this pleasing performance nicely. Dialogue is communicated with clarity and focus, beefed up by solid low frequencies. So when Odin starts barking at his foolhardy son, or King Laufey sneers in his deep voice, both sound rich and realistic. Great value So it all depends on which ones people, as you say, are referring to. The upper Wharfedale ranges like Jade, Opus, Evo and Diamond are outstanding audiophile class speakers. Then there is the real junk like the Zaldeks. There's still plenty to admire in the way the Diamond 10.1s perform, but the emergence of some seriously talented rivals – such as the Arcaydis DM1 and Monitor Audio BX2 – has slightly taken the shine off this Award-winning speaker. The result is a little loudspeaker with a quoted frequency response of 65Hz-20kHz and 88dB/1w/1m sensitivity. Considering that its nominal impedance is put at a bog-standard 8 ohms, that's a good figure and means the Diamond 12.1 goes a little louder for the same amount of power than many price and/or size rivals. Maximum power handling is put at 100W RMS. THE LISTENING Partly that’s because it’s been going since 1932, when Gilbert Briggs built his first design in his basement in Ilkley in Yorkshire, England. A market town by the river Wharfe, a part of the world generally known to this day, as The Dales. Wharfedale being just one of those. In fact, I seriously considered living in Wharfedale at one time – the perfect place for an audiophile to dwell, eh?

The Diamonds boast a curved cabinet, which helps to minimise unwanted internal interference, and even the surround of the Kevlar mid/bass driver has a moulded pattern to help reduce the effects of standing waves.

The ensuing pursuit of the invading Frost Giants showcases more of this solid bass work, alongside crisp mids and highs that fire across the expansive soundstage. It’s thrilling stuff, managing to sound aggressive and dynamic without stepping over the line into harshness.I have owned many Wharfedale speakers and I have to say they are probably the most consistent brand across their models as far as quality, don't get me wrong though most of the model lines have different sound signatures. Currently I own the Evolution 40's up front with the Evo center and Opus tri surrounds in the rear and the sound is so balanced and clear. I have owned the following models over the years: Treble guitar notes hit with clarity and some hints of brightness to higher frequencies are soon removed after the speakers are given time to run in. In terms of my expectations, the Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 speakers have provided me with the sonic surprise of the year thus far. They excite and delight sure but they also add a drop of magic to the mix that demands your attention. The answer I got was that Wharfedale made one critical marketing mistake. They decided to expand their market by branching out into low end consumer equipment, and rather than expanding their market among general consumers, it devalued their Brand Name for Music Enthusiast and Audiophile. When a new generation grew into the market, they already associated Wharfedale with low end Walmart/Curry's class equipment, and intuitively felt the wanted something better.
