Description

Teak and Mahogany are both prized hardwoods each with distinct qualities and applications. Teak, known for its water resistance and durability, is ideal for outdoor furniture and boat construction. Mahogany, with its rich color and workability, is best suited for indoor furniture, cabinetry, and musical instruments. Mahogany, on the other hand, does not do well when exposed to direct sunlight. It does last many years outdoors when properly maintained but, it is not as weatherproof as teak wood. We have established that teak is more durable than mahogany because of teak’s natural oils and rubber which makes it water and rot-resistant.

One of the main differences between mahogany teakwood and other types of teak is the type of tree from which it is harvested. Mahogany teakwood comes from the Tectona Grandis species of tree, while other types of teak come from different species within the same genus. These differences in the type of tree and its environment result in differences in the scent of the wood. While teak and mahogany are both expensive types of wood, teak is far more expensive than mahogany. But if you consider that you are dealing with wood that is going to last so long, then the price seems to justify itself somehow. Teak vs. Mahogany: Sustainability For outdoor use, teak is the best choice as it is resistant to water and rotting, and it has natural oils that can repel insects. Mahogany, on the other hand, is a great choice for indoor use because its reddish-brown color can add to the beauty of your interior space. Mahogany is also a durable wood and can last long if cared for properly.

However, the price of mahogany was still high after the war, and so the cutters turned to cutting mahogany. The first Honduras mahogany arrived in Kingston, Jamaica, in November 1763, and the first shipments arrived in Britain the following year. [35] GRIN Species Records of Toona". Teak, also known as Tectona grandis, can be found in tropical forests in Asia. Teak originates from Myanmar and traces its history to the 7 th century when wealthy people adorned their homes with this wood. Later, the Dutch favored teak and used it for shipbuilding and as material for construction. Until the 19th century all of the mahogany was regarded as one species, although varying in quality and character according to soil and climate. In 1836 the German botanist Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini (1797–1848) identified a second species while working on specimens collected on the Pacific coast of Mexico, and named it Swietenia humilis. In 1886 a third species, Swietenia macrophylla, was named by Sir George King (1840–1909) after studying specimens of Honduras mahogany planted in the Botanic Gardens in Calcutta, India. If cared for properly, mahogany and teak can last many years outdoors. If you are looking for wood furniture to spice up your outdoor space, teak is the best choice between the two. Hardness While the trade in mahogany from the Spanish and French territories in America remained moribund for most of the 18th century, this was not true for those islands under British control. In 1721 the British Parliament removed all import duties from timber imported into Britain from British possessions in the Americas. [28] This immediately stimulated the trade in West Indian timbers including, most importantly, mahogany. Importations of mahogany into England (and excluding those to Scotland, which were recorded separately) reached 525 tons per annum by 1740, 3,688 tons by 1750, and more than 30,000 tons in 1788, the peak year of the 18th century trade. [29] Mahogany wood is used to make high-quality indoor flooring because it is harder than other woods like pine or oak. Mahogany’s reddish brown color also makes for an interesting choice for floorings. Aside from floorings, mahogany is also used for furniture joinery, and musical instruments. Price Both teak and mahogany differ greatly in terms of their coloring. Wood generally goes through a natural aging process, especially when exposed to the sun and this will change the wood’s coloring over time.
