Following a government-commissioned report compiled by television’s ‘Queen of Shops’ Mary Portas, Hailsham Town Council and the local Chamber of Commerce took the decision in September 2012 to form a Town Team ( Hailsham Forward), which was set up to take a closer look at ways to revitalise the town’s High Street and surrounding urban environment, increase footfall and spend within the town. Many years ago it became the market town for the prosperous surrounding agricultural district. There are local light industrial undertakings. The Maurice Thornton Playing Field in the east of the town and provides additional facilities for football (junior and senior), as well as stoolball and athletics.

The buildings where clones are held between donations. Some of them, like Kingsfield, are repurposed hotels or "holiday camps," while others, like the one in Dover, seem to have been built expressly for the recovery of donors. rounders The children who live in Hailsham believe they are receiving an education, but in reality they are basically prisoners who are deprived of most information about the world beyond its grounds. Many of the Hailsham staff believe that they are improving conditions for the children, but nevertheless they enforce the rules. Because all the children are clones, none of them has parents or any experience of what growing up in a family might be like. Having been institutionalized their entire lives, they accept their situation as normal. The reader is encouraged to wonder what human nature is under such circumstances. Although only the first third of the novel takes place at Hailsham, the school’s presence hangs heavily over the following chapters of Kathy’s life, and its impact on her identity seems irreversible. But for me at least, this non-appearance of Hailsham students just added to a feeling that Hailsham was now far away in the past, and that the ties binding our old crowd were fraying. Chapter 16
While the organ donation system and the “special” nature of the Hailsham characters seem distant, Ishiguro draws many parallels to the human injustices from our own world — many of which seemed like a widely recognised fact of life.
