When Plates were first seen in the anime in Journey to the Unown!, they were depicted with the same kind of square shape that they have in the games. However, in their later anime appearances, the Plates are depicted with a different, six-angle shape. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, each Plate has a unique engraving, which can be read by selecting "Read text" on the Plate in the inventory. Unlike register plates, closure plates do not require access hatches or doors. This is because with a chimney flue liner in place, you won’t need your chimney to be swept. A note on sealing plates In the image above the register plate is for a large fireplace recess. There is a hole in the middle for the flue pipe and two hatches either side for accessing above the plate to retrieve soot. In smaller fireplaces there may be little room for these hatches and this causes difficulty. It is usually the wisest choice to fit a chimney liner and avoid the need for a closure plate. Instead you can fit a more simple "closure plate" (see lower down in this article). A closure plate does not have to be metal and does not have to have access hatches.

In addition to a closure plate, you will usually need a sealing plate too (sometimes called a finishing plate). The Pixie Plate is the only Plate that can be obtained an unlimited number of times in a single game. It can be obtained repeatedly from Stow-on-Side's bargain shop in Pokémon Sword and Shield. If a 904 316 chimney liner is being fitted then a register plate is not required. A plate is still required (to prevent heat being wasted by travelling up into the chimney and also to prevent "old soot smells" into the room as a chimney warms from the heat of the liner) but this plate is called a closure plate which we will come to shortly. It is rare nowadays that chimney liners are not fitted (although stove flue pipes might be connected directly to pot lined chimneys) and register plates are rarely fitted nowadays.

Because closure plates don’t have to completely seal up the chimney cavity, they don’t have to be manufactured to the same tolerances as register plates. In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the Plates are obtainable in the same locations as in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, with the Pixie Plate also now being available.
