About this deal

The best carbon monoxide alarms you can buy in 2023 1. Nest Protect: Best smart CO and smoke detector The Kidde K5CO carbon monoxide alarm will protect you and your family from dangerous carbon monoxide gas, and features a 10 year sensor life. Supplied with 2 x Duracell AA alkaline batteries to power the unit, the K5CO carbon monoxide detector continuously monitors the CO levels detected within a room. These units can be wall mounted or free standing, and feature a 7 year manufacturer's warranty. The K5CO replaces its predecessor (5CO) and can be fitted to existing 5CO baseplates.

FireAngel is a major player in the field of CO, fire and smoke detection and this unique system is clearly a clever, albeit pricey, way to protect the entire household in one fell swoop. The Nest Protect is very easy to set up: simply remove the battery tab, launch the app, log in to your Wi-Fi, give it a name (kitchen, lounge and so on) and mount it in a suitably elevated place on a wall. Also note that carbon monoxide has been proven to spread into neighbouring properties through open windows and, in semi-detached or terrace houses, through loft spaces. If your property has an attached garage with a connecting door through to the house, it is recommended to fit a CO alarm inside the house leading from that doorway. In living spaces: they should be positioned close to where the occupant's head is likely to be most of the time – e.g., on your bedside table. Do not install CO alarms within 3 metres of doors or windows, above radiators, or immediately close to anything that gives off steam or fumes like a cooker or shower room. Similarly, it is not recommended to install detectors in dusty areas such as workshops or garages.

Near an appliance: they should be placed within 1 to 3 metres horizontally from the appliance and between the height of the appliance to 150mm below the ceiling – i.e., not above a stove where it would be in the path of steam or fumes. The Nest Protect passed our sealed incense test with flying colours: the smoke alarm went off first, followed by the CO alarm five minutes later; according to the app, the CO level was 414ppm and increasing. We can’t think of a better CO currently alarm on the market, particularly as it also detects smoke. The 7DCO comes with a ten-year lifespan and is BS EN 50291-2 certified for camping, caravanning and travel, or even use on a boat. As with all CO detectors, the Kidde provides end-of-life and battery warnings, along with the obligatory test/reset button for peace of mind. The only thing to watch out for is that it’s powered by a pair of AA batteries which need replacing roughly every two years We had no issues whatsoever during tests, but it means this alarm won’t be compliant with the new Scottish regulations.

Delivery Options

Battery powered carbon monoxide alarms can typically be installed wall-mounted or left free-standing on flat, level surface. It’s also worth noting that the test button on these devices doesn’t actually test the sensor – it only makes sure that the circuit’s working.
