About this deal

Similarly, Gordon’s gin is now somewhat weaker than when the recipe was first written. Consequently, we’d suggest choosing between Citadelle and Beefeater gin. Corpse Reviver N°2 Dubonnet Rouge is a sweet, red, fortified wine made from a blend of grape varieties including Ruby Red, Cabernet, and Muscat of Alexandria. Dubonnet is a sweet, aromatised wine-based quinquina that has been enjoyed as an aperitif for over 150 years. It was created by Joseph Dubonnet, a French chemist, in 1846. When does a drink transcend fashion? Cosmopolitans have been and gone, and now it might be all about negronis, but only Dubonnet has been granted a royal warrant, joining the likes of Cadbury, Quaker Oats and Paxton & Whitfield, the UK’s oldest cheesemonger.

When it comes to serving Dubonnet, there are a few different ways to enjoy it. Dubonnet Rouge is often served over ice with a slice of lemon or orange, while Dubonnet Blanc is typically served chilled.

To make a fortified wine, the vintner adds brandy to the red wine base to stop the fermentation process early. The spiked wine is then flavored and aromatized with herbs and other ingredients like cinchona bark. The best way to drink Dubonnet?

Unlike its competitors such as Dubonnet, Lillet’s Kina wasn’t marketed as a remedy but a drink for pleasure. Similarly, it was produced from Sauternes grapes and was the only white wine quinquina on the market when it was launched in 1887. American styles are stronger in alcohol (about 19% vol.) and slightly sweeter than their French cousin. The reason is that quinine, which produces bitter flavors, is less dominant. HOW TO SERVE DUBONNET Quinine: Quinine is a bitter compound that is extracted from the bark of the cinchona tree. It is added to Dubonnet in small amounts to give the drink a slightly bitter taste and to help balance out the sweetness. The sweet, aromatic aperitif was invented in 1846 by the French chemist Joseph Dubonnet, who added quinine to ensure soldiers in North Africa consumed the antimalarial medicine. Gin and tonics were first drunk for the same reason.

Since quinquina isn’t a strict category of beverage in itself and part of a much larger family of aromatic wines, producers have some freedom to produce their varieties. While most follow a similar process as the one outlined above, you can stumble across different types. Americano Quinquina As we mentioned above, Lillet today is not an authentic quinine. Therefore, one of the substitutes we suggest below should be used instead. In this case, we’d recommend either Cap Corse or Cocchi Americano. Alderson, Andrew (July 5, 2009). "Exclusive: behind the scenes with the Queen". The Daily Telegraph. London. Archived from the original on July 8, 2009 . Retrieved November 25, 2011.Simon de Beauregard, a director at Pernod Ricard, told the Mail on Sunday: “We are delighted Her Majesty enjoys our beautiful brand and humbled to have received a royal warrant.” According to Tiago Mira, lounge, bar and general manager at London’s fabled Goring Hotel - itself favoured by the royal family - the drink’s popularity among the royals stemmed from the days when fortified wines were de rigeur. Another victim of Lillet’s reformulation, the Corpse Reviver N°2 is a famous Savoy recipe. Again, we suggest using Cocchi Americano or Cap Corse instead of Lillet Blanc for an authentic experience. Our May 2022 issue cover star, this Dubonnet cheesecake can be made up to 2 days ahead. Cover and store in the fridge until ready to serve, then decorate with fresh fruit and chocolate curls to serve, if you like. As we highlighted above several times, quinquina can be made with red, white, or even rosé wine. In most cases, quinquina will be produced from a blend of grapes of the same colour. Add the spirits: gin first followed by Dubonnet, then add the half wheel of lemon, making sure it’s pip-free.

Different Quinquina Types & How They Taste

Dubonnet was first sold in 1846 by Joseph Dubonnet, in response to a competition run by the French Government to find a way of persuading French Foreign Legionnaires in North Africa to drink quinine. [4] Quinine combats malaria but is very bitter. In 1976, Dubonnet was acquired by Pernod Ricard, a French company that specializes in wine and spirits. There is another style available, though. In the 1940s, when the Germans occupied France, exporting French products was impossible. But the Americans didn’t want to abstain from the fortified wine, so they decided to make their own. For this purpose, they created a slightly different formula. For instance, they replaced Merlot grapes with Muscat of Alexandria. Since 1976, the French company Pernod Ricard has been the only European producer. Besides the original red wine (Dubonnet Rouge), they now make two variations: Be aware that many online retailers might put Dubonnet into the Vermouth category, although it does not really belong there.
