About this deal

With rear suspension and large, air-filled tyres, this is a buggy clearly designed for off-roading, which may not suit all families. However, the Nipper Double V4 is still fairly slimline (72cm), which makes it great for urban life too, whether you’re nipping round shops or getting on and off the bus. I love my Out ‘n’ About double! It’s so easy and light to wheel, and narrower than it looks; it even fits through doors in my house. My kids are very comfy in it too. It’s heavy when folded down, and bulky in the boot of the car, but it does fit."

The Nipper Double has a reputation as an off-road buggy, and no wonder – its rear suspension and air-filled tyres make for a smooth ride over even the bumpiest woodland trail. But our tester found it equally well-suited to urban life, as the Out n About double buggy showed itself unfazed by school runs, park trips and errands in town. Double prams can be very bulky and generally measure up to around 82cm in width. But with standard external doorways measuring around 76 to 96cm, most double buggies will fit through doors. However, there are slimmer options available that will cope with most small spaces. Suitable from: Birth to 22kg per seat (around four years) | Weight: 12.8kg | Folded dimensions: 71 x 36 x 79 cm (excluding wheels) | Harness type: 5-point | Adjustable handlebar: Yes What we like Age range: Newborn (with carrycot) to 4 years (or age 7 in single mode) | Maximum load: 15kg per seat (or 25kg in single mode) | Weight: 12.9kg (in double mode) | Dimensions: 70 × 61 × 29cm (folded); seat unit 88 x 36 x 23 (unfolded) | Orientation: Tandem (world- and parent-facing) | Travel system-compatible: Yes What we love The buggy comes with everything you need to get out and about with two children. The carrycot converts to a seat after six months so there’s no need to buy extra seats or store a bulky carrycot.Suitable from: Birth to 25kg (around five years) | Weight: 12.9kg | Folded dimensions: 93 x 63 x 39 cm | Harness type: 5-point | Adjustable handlebar: Yes What we like I wanted something that could convert to a double when I needed it to, rather than have both seats all the time. It’s great for all-terrain and has been on many muddy forest walks. The basket is huge and it's a very sturdy buggy that never tips up. I also like how the handlebar can extend up, which is good for when the toddler's on the buggy board. I also like that I can use it as a travel system and put the car seat on it if I just want to nip into a shop. The only thing I would say is it is quite heavy when both kids are in it... and it does take a lot of space up in the boot."

The Out n About Nipper Sport is great to run with, really light and supportive for the little one. It flies on tarmac and holds its own off road" - Mumsnet user, emmathedilemma While the Nipper Double looks wide thanks to its larger-than-average wheels, it’s actually one of the narrowest side-by-side models on the market (72cm, narrower than the Mountain Buggy Nano Duo or the Bugaboo Donkey Twin) – and, at 12.8kg, it’s also one of the lightest we tested. With large air-filled tyres, rear-wheel suspension and lightweight frames, running buggies are sturdier than regular pushchairs and offer a smooth journey for both runners and riders. Unsurprisingly, for a pushchair that performs well off-road, this Out n About double buggy has been designed to clean up nicely. Each seat liner is wipe-clean, but for serious spills they’re easy to remove and machine washable. They fared well in our tester’s washing machine (washed only once following juice spillages), without fading, bleeding or shrinking. The sun hoods are equally easy to remove and can be washed if necessary.Adjustable handlebars: It’s well worth looking for a pram that comes with an adjustable handlebar, especially if different family members will be running with it. You’ll want to experiment with different handlebar heights to find a comfortable running position. I chose it because I wanted my children so they could both see out. It fits through doorways fine. I love that I can take it on any terrain. It is much better off-road than my single one, so it's opened up more walks for us. It feels lovely to push and it fits in the boot of my small car. It’s very practical. It is a good price, too." When it comes to the best double buggies, there's a huge range of different designs to consider, including basic side-by-side pushchairs, tandem prams, sturdy off-roaders and lightweight strollers for whizzing round cities, putting in the car boot and for taking on holiday. Take it slow: It’s best to start things off slowly and gradually increase your pace as you become more comfortable with running with your child in tow. The best double buggy is the Mountain Buggy Duet V3.2. A compact and versatile side-by-side pram, it’s suitable for twins or siblings of different ages and can take up to two seats, carrycots or car seats. It has an easy one-handed fold mechanism, a big storage basket and four big tyres to make it a great all-rounder for any terrain.

We tasked busy mum-of-two Liz with putting the double buggies through their paces. At Mumsnet, we believe like-for-like comparisons are the fairest and most consistent way to test products because each one is tested by the same person in the same scenarios for at least a week. To ensure the products were safe, Gemma chatted to Philip LeShirley, Product Safety Advisor at The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), who advised what to look for when purchasing a pram to ensure it’s safe to use.Prams with a swivel wheel (out n about nipper, Thule urban glide, mountain buggy) are a great middle ground. Still got really decent size wheels and the option to fix the front wheel for off road or have the swivel for when out and about in time" - Mumsnet user, SillyBry Our verdict Weight: The lighter the overall weight of the pram, the easier it is to push, especially if you’re transporting an older child across uneven terrain. Look for a lightweight option with an aluminium frame.

This is a buggy that will, quite literally, go the distance, with a maximum weight limit per seat of 22kg, which is around four years of age. It’s not travel system-compatible, but you can attach a carrycot to give more support in the early months. Cleaning: look at how easy the buggy will be to clean. Is the material waterproof? Can stains be removed easily? Consider whether you’d like to be able to remove the covers for machine-washing. While it’s safe to use from birth, we don’t feel the seats recline flat enough to give adequate support for newborns, so we’d recommend this buggy from six months plus. Unfortunately, you can’t attach a carrycot and it’s not travel system-compatible, but we love the fuss-free design that’s ideal for busy, budget-conscious families. As a running buggy, it’s a sturdy piece of kit with a suspension that can be adjusted to suit all running terrains - hello bumpy forest trails! The comfy padded seat (with five-point harness) offers a smooth ride and has plenty of room for kids of all sizes. There’s a rear light for added safety on grey days and adjustable airflow vents for sunny ones. The pram comes with two world-facing seats that can be used from birth, but the Baby Jogger also takes up to two carrycots, which are cosy, easy to pop on and off, and can be collapsed when not in use. The seats are deep and each has an infinite recline, a decent hood and an adjustable calf rest.Read next: How to clean a pram, including tried-and-tested tips from Mumsnetters Best double buggies at a glance Suitable from: Birth to 22kg (around four years) | Weight: 11.5kg | Folded dimensions: 87 x 69 x 34 cm | Harness type: 5-point | Adjustable handlebar: Yes What we like They come as either side-by-side double pushchairs Opens a new window or as tandem buggies with one seat in front of another. Single pushchairs that convert to doubles are often tandems; you attach the extra seat on top.
