Sage that is planted in a pot of around 12-16 inches across, with drainage holes in the base and soil amended with sand or grit should give the plant a good chance at reviving and growing well. In absence of auxin, which would typically be released by the apical bud, the growth of lower buds begins, which takes significant energy. Sage actually has a preference for soils that are not overly rich in nutrients so adding fertilizer can often be to the determinant of the aroma and flavour of the leaves. If a young tree has two competing stems at the top that are nearly the same height, significant energy is expended as they compete to grow the tallest. A few simple pruning cuts to remove competing stems early in a tree’s life can establish a dominant central leader and direct growth and energy upward, resulting in a taller shade tree sooner.
