About this deal

It said: "We praised high standards, we demanded high standards but, as we are now only too painfully aware, for a period of a few years up to 2006 some who worked for us, or in our name, fell shamefully short of those standards. What I'm interested in is not closing down newspapers, I'm interested in those who were responsible being brought to justice and those who have responsibility for the running of that newspaper taking their responsibility and I don't think those two things have happened today."

The owner of a Budgens supermarket in north London has tweeted that he will not be selling the News of the World "for now" and is encouraging other retailers to do the same, my colleague Haroon Siddique points out. It's a franchise so he only speaks for his own branch. I feel very strongly that there are lots of people have very, very mixed and contaminated motives in all this. People rant on about the way Murdoch has corrupted and corroded and our political debate and this kind of thing. I'm not a believer in that line of argument. What Rupert Murdoch has done for British journalism over the last 30 to 40 years is actually very considerable. Booth, Stanley (2000). The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones (2nded.). A Capella Books. pp. 271–278. ISBN 1-55652-400-5. Viewed from the US, the British media can look like a tiny, vicious snakepit, to which Myler is returning with no immediate plans. He is leaving the Daily News of his own volition; his children and grandchildren are in the UK, and he and his wife miss them terribly.

FairPensions, a charity that promotes responsible investment by pension funds, says pension investors "should seriously consider whether the takeover of BSkyB by NewsCorp is in the long-term interests of their beneficiaries". Below the line commenter Delenn also points out the www.thesunonsunday.com was registered two days ago. (We already know that sunonsunday.co.uk has been recently registered).

There was sadness, simmering anger, handshakes and hugs as we gathered for one last time. Someone brought in a box of cup cakes, each bearing a letter in icing that spelled out "News of the World".

About us

As with other Sunday newspapers, the News of the World was published on Saturday whenever Christmas Day fell on Sunday. He said: "I want to pay tribute to this wonderful team of people here who after a really difficult day have produced a brilliantly professional newspaper." The News Corporation is no stranger to scandal. Fines for indecency, lawsuits charging anticompetitive business practices and libel claims are a fact of life for the company, which has been able to easily absorb the financial inconvenience. The paper's motto was "All human life is there". The paper's name was linked with sports events as early as 1903 when the golfing tournament The News of the World Match Play Championship began (now under British PGA auspices). The News of the World Darts Championship existed from 1927 on a regional basis and became a national tournament from 1947 to 1990. There was also a News of the World Championship in snooker from 1950 to 1959 which eclipsed the official professionals' competition for a number of years. In athletics, the Emsley Carr Mile race was started in 1953 in memory of the former editor, and is still run annually. The paper's Football Annual was a long-standing publication (sponsoring it until 2008), and a Household Guide and Almanac was also published at one time.

Yesterday's exchanges in the Commons were ones I thought I would never witness. They are of historic importance. Senior elected politicians dared to challenge the powerful Murdoch empire and there was an air of catharsis as they did so ... In recent years the Sunday tabloid had deepened its Irish coverage and hired a number of top Irish journalists and columnists including the crime reporter and best selling author Paul Williams." The tyrants lose their swagger and those that lived in fear dare to speak out. The dynamics of the News International saga are similar to the ones that shape the fall of dictatorial regimes, except in this case it is some mighty media executives who are suddenly fearful and the politicians who are liberated. Department of the Official Report (Hansard) (9 June 1999). "Hansard Debates". Westminster: House of Commons. pt 54 . Retrieved 14 March 2010.

Over on Alan Rusbridger's live Q&A my colleague Roy Greenslade has pitched in with a couple of informative replies. Re Tesco, James Robinson has noticed that Andrew Higginson, Chief Executive of Retailing Services and Group Strategy Director at Tesco, also sits as a non-executive director on the BSkyB board.

It remains to be seen whether Mr Murdoch's words will be matched by a genuine attempt to get to the truth. The BBC is reporting that the culture secretary has received 100,000 submissions on this takeover bid, which will delay Jeremy Hunt's decision. Hunt will probably appreciate this since it would be so politically toxic to approve the bid in the current climate. The company who have registered sunonsunday.co.uk "look small", according to a colleague. However Chris Moran also points out that the News of the World also has the sunday.co.uk domain name. At the moment it redirects to newsoftheworld.co.uk, but potentially provides scope for a differently titled Sunday newspaper. Yes, the one about footy star Ryan Giggs having an eight-year affair with his sister-in-law was classic red-top fodder. But there was also the campaign for a Sarah's Law to protect children from predatory paedophiles. And earlier this year, my political team was proud to have played a part in forcing the prime minister to honour his pledge to enshrine the military covenant in law, meaning a better deal for our armed forces who put their lives on the line. Adds … You ask: why are we finding out information on a drip feed basis? The answer is that the contents of the Mulcaire documents are in the possession of the police and, in specific cases, lawyers. I would guess that there is leakage from those sources. As a FTSE 100 company, BSkyB shares can be found in virtually all pension funds in the UK. The question for UK pension providers is whether the takeover of BSkyB by NewsCorp is in the best long-term interests of their millions of members. Holders of BSkyB shares are expected to have a vote on the takeover proposal in the next few months.
