About this deal

Because there are so many great pads on the market, it can be difficult to make a selection. In this guide, we break down some of the most important considerations for purchasing the perfect sleeping pad. Overall, I absolutely love this pad. It’s extremely lightweight without sacrificing luxury and comfort. Klymalite™ Synthetic insulation: Lightweight, compressible and durable, advanced synthetic insulation in the chambers slows the transfer of air between the top and bottom halves of the pad for improved thermal performance. Since the R Value of the Comfort Plus SI is around 4, mild winter adventures are now a possibility. That said, keep your expectations realistic. This is not an extreme cold weather sleeping pad.

The heat retention of the pad is noticeably efficient. Using bleeding edge TILT technology within Stratus R synthetic insulation, it is able to greatly diminish radiant heat loss. This is a complex system offering lightweight, low-bulk warmth for chilly nights in the wild. Overall, this is a great option for those who love the reliability and ease of a foam pad, but may want a bit more of the loft and comfort found in air pads.Let’s take a look at what makes a sleeping pad comfortable. The optimal sleeping pad will feel as light as a feather; you want to feel like you are sleeping on air – no pressure points or deflation throughout the night!

The NeoAir Xtherm ditches the mainstream rectangular shape for a contoured build. This makes it overall more weight-effective, without compromising comfort and it’s a seriously comfortable, seriously lightweight sleeping pad – as an all rounder, the Xtherm is hard to beat, but it ain’t cheap and there are some better value options out there. Most air pads have flat valves, which include an internal flap that prevents air from escaping in between inflation breaths. These valves are simple and durable, and most pads with flat valves can be inflated with somewhere between 10 and 25 breaths. This pad is super comfortable and affordable, plus it has an awesome inflation bag to make setting up camp a breeze

Now I have always had mixed feelings about double pads. Kind of like double sleeping bags – I love the concept – but the reality does not always produce the best night’s sleep. When all is said and done, you’re not buying this pad for winter camping, you are buying it because it’s a comfortable, lightweight summer sleeping pad. Score: 2.5/5 Comfort/Stability On my first night on the Static V2, I felt that I slept much more comfortable thanks to the body mapping. The V-shape cradles your body, so you don’t slip off your pad or twist your sleeping bag around in the middle of the night. As the name suggests, the sleeping pad has a “V” shape from the center, while the outer edges are rectangles that form somewhat of a side rail. See the photo above. This sleeping pad is the lightest 4-season pad we've ever seen while also being the warmest in our lineup

I don't know if this is a new change for all Klymit pads, but the "patch kit" for the Insulated Static V Luxe is just a piece of gear tape. My old 2011 Static V "patch kit" is glue + a patch that looks like the actual material of the pad. I have never needed to use my old patch kit, but I presume the gear tape is not as good/permanent fix as the old patch kit. That said, the STS Ultralight Insulated pad delivers an all-around great three season performance for the price. This ultralight Thermarest inflatable mattress is, as far as self-inflating sleeping pads go, the smallest sleeping pad on the market. Unrivaled in terms of convenience, the Pro Lite comes in a range of three sizes (short, long, and regular) and each size is a different price meaning you can save some money if you need a small sleeping pad. Some sleeping pads have a women’s version or are designed specifically for women. They often look quite similar to their unisex cousins, but there are some differences that many female adventurers may appreciate. Both myself (a cold sleeper and 5’6” woman), and my boyfriend (a hot sleeper and 6′ male) tested the Klymit sleeping pad. Twist-Pull Valve: Secure and simple, it allows inflation in as few as 10 breaths and opens wide for rapid, complete deflation.

Self-Inflating pads have been around for many decades. Most pads in this category combine inflation with open-cell foam to decrease puncture risk and increase durability. For complete transparency, this is a very early first look, and due to COVID-19, I haven’t yet taken this pad into the field for a good overnight camping experience. I’ll update the story with more in-depth review material once I have a chance to do so. Sleeping pads typically come in various sizes, and users can choose the option that best suits their body and preferences. Common sizes include regular, which is usually around 6 feet long, and large, which tends to be closer to 80 inches. Pad width also varies, but anywhere between 18 and 26 inches is fairly standard. For starters, they will sometimes be wider and more cushioned at the hips, and will often have a greater R-value overall than the unisex version. Many are also made a little shorter. While these are minor changes, they could provide a significant comfort boost for certain people. Price

The Xtherm does a terrific job of retaining heat. Pretty much all of the mainstream gear testers have showered the Xtherm with rewards for the duration of it’s life. Now that the results are in, I hope you find it easier to choose a sleeping pad for your travel style 🙂 If you’re new to exploring and camping outdoors, you might be worried about how cozy your sleeping bag is going to be. It’s important to remember here that a good sleeping bag with a camping pad can create a level of warmth, insulation, and comfort that simply wouldn’t be possible with a sleeping bag alone. It’s one of the lightest none-inflatable mats around but it doesn’t fold up quite as small as I would like, that’s probably the main disadvantage of this sleeping pad. This was what I was most excited to test out, as my older pad has a normal, simple design. While I like my other pad, I do tend to wake-up multiple times in the night to adjust, as I am a side sleeper.
